KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that Malaysia must adopt a proactive approach to strengthen its national cybersecurity infrastructure, prioritizing early threat anticipation and prevention over reactive countermeasures amid increasingly sophisticated cyber risks.
Speaking as the moderator during the 14th Series of the Malaysia MADANI Intellectual Forum in Kuala Lumpur on Friday night, November 6, 2026, Anwar stated that defensive capabilities must be continuously upgraded to safeguard key economic sectors, financial institutions, and critical national infrastructure.
“We must build strength to anticipate attacks. Do not wait to be reactive. We must be prepared to anticipate,” Anwar declared, noting that cyber vulnerabilities are no longer confined to developing states, as technologically advanced European nations with robust security networks also face frequent high-level cyber intrusions.
To bolster national cyber defense capabilities:
- National Security Council Review: The government convened a special National Security Council (NSC) meeting to evaluate technical expertise, operational readiness, and systemic vulnerabilities across public and private sectors.
- Parliamentary Briefings: Detailed security assessments and strategic briefings were delivered to Members of Parliament regarding emerging cyber attack vectors.
- Civil Service Coordination: Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar met with ministry secretaries-general, directors-general, and senior administration officials to streamline inter-agency coordination and disaster response protocols.
Addressing the forum’s wider mandate, Anwar highlighted the monthly intellectual series as an open platform for civil servants, researchers, private industry leaders, and academics to provide transparent feedback and voice differing policy perspectives. He assured that actionable recommendations gathered during these informal sessions would be summarized and tabled directly to the Cabinet for policy refinement.
The 14th edition of the forum focused primarily on agricultural resilience and food security, recognizing both components as integral pillars of long-term national security and economic stability.
Distinguished attendees at the event included:
- Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu: Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.
- Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir: Minister of Higher Education.
