Malaysian Hindus Prepare To Celebrate Deepavali On Sunday, Highlighting Unity And Tradition

Deepavali 2026 celebration Malaysia Hindus Ganga Snanam

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 – Hindus across Malaysia will celebrate Deepavali, the Festival of Lights, on Sunday, November 8, 2026, marking one of the most significant events in the Hindu calendar with traditional prayers, religious rituals, and family reunions.

Deepavali, derived from the Tamil words Deepam (oil lamp) and Avali (a row or arrangement of lamps), symbolizes the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.

Malaysia Hindhudharma Maamandram President Rishi Kumar Vadivelu stated that the core tradition of lighting oil lamps (agal vilakku) represents welcoming hope and prosperity while overcoming negative personal traits such as arrogance, jealousy, and ego.

Preparations begin on the eve of Deepavali, Saturday, November 7, when families conduct prayers to honor their clan deity (Kula Deivam).

“On Deepavali morning, families observe the traditional Ganga Snanam ritual, which involves applying sesame oil to the head before bathing, a practice believed to bring spiritual blessings,” Rishi Kumar explained. Following the ritual bath, devotees don new attire, seek blessings from parents and elders, perform temple prayers, and gather for traditional festive meals and sweets.

Homes will be illuminated with oil lamps and adorned with intricate, colorful kolam designs.

Malaysia Hindu Sangam National President Thanga Ganesan urged Malaysians to use the occasion to strengthen cross-cultural harmony through open house visits.

“In our multiracial Malaysia, let us share the joy of Deepavali with our Malay, Chinese and other friends from diverse communities. Through mutual respect, understanding and unity, we can further strengthen the harmony that makes our nation unique,” Thanga Ganesan remarked.

Adding to the festive greetings, MIC Vice-President and former Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk T. Murugiah called on the Indian community to support the less fortunate. He also urged the government to increase focus on the welfare, education, employment opportunities, and economic development of the Indian community, particularly B40 low-income households.
