WASHINGTON, Nov 6 – US President Donald Trump stated on Thursday, November 5, 2026, that a peace agreement ending the war between Russia and Ukraine is “very close” and could evolve into a comprehensive security pact involving “all of Europe”.
Trump’s comments followed a White House event where First Lady Melania Trump hosted Russian and Ukrainian delegations to mark a successful localized humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky, a city in the southern Kherson region.
The delegation included Kirill Dmitriev, a senior envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with Ukrainian representatives Davyd Arakhamia (head of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s parliamentary faction) and Dmytro Lubinets (Ukrainian Human Rights Ombudsman).
When asked if he had met directly with Dmitriev at the White House, Trump confirmed the encounter.
“Yeah, I did. I can’t tell you what I discussed, but I’m just telling you, it’s going to be a big agreement, and it’s going to involve more than Ukraine… I could even say it might involve all of Europe,” Trump told reporters. “I think we’re going to get it ended pretty soon, very soon, maybe. It’s going to be a big, beautiful agreement, and everyone’s going to be thrilled.”
Trump emphasized the staggering human toll of the conflict to justify the urgency of negotiations: “They’re losing between the two of them, they’re losing 25,000 people to death, 25,000 people a month. It’s a bloodbath, and it has to end.”
The event celebrated the six-day temporary truce in Oleshky (October 27 – November 1, 2026), which enabled the safe evacuation of nearly 800 civilians and facilitated emergency medical and food supply deliveries. During the gathering, First Lady Melania Trump delivered personal letters addressed to Putin and Zelenskyy to Dmitriev and Arakhamia, urging both nations to build on the temporary arrangement.
The diplomatic momentum comes as US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff prepare to mediate formal trilateral talks between Russia and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, scheduled for November 10–11, 2026.
