Malaysia Reaffirms Readiness To Assist Indonesia With Transboundary Haze Relief

Malaysia Indonesia haze aid offer Ahmad Zahid

BAGAN DATUK, Oct 25 – Malaysia maintains its offer to assist Indonesia in combating regional transboundary haze caused by forest fires, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed on Sunday, October 25, 2026.

Speaking to reporters after officiating the Bagan Datuk 2026 Sultan Nazrin Shah Bridge Run, Ahmad Zahid stated that the Cabinet discussed disaster relief options on Friday to ensure coordinated bilateral action between the neighboring nations.

Addressing the ongoing firefighting challenges in Indonesia, Ahmad Zahid noted that while Jakarta has deployed over 16,000 personnel alongside water-bombing aircraft and helicopters, severe visibility loss and a lack of cloud formations have constrained aerial firefighting and cloud-seeding missions.

“We sympathise with their situation. However, we still hope that this problem can be resolved because it is causing neighbouring countries, particularly Malaysia, to suffer the adverse effects of the haze on health,” Ahmad Zahid stated, highlighting rising respiratory and allergic complications among vulnerable populations.

Bilateral diplomatic communications have been initiated at the highest government levels to monitor fire suppression progress and coordinate relief readiness.

Transboundary Haze Relief, High-Level Diplomacy, and Bridge Run Metrics

Key points on bilateral haze coordination, diplomatic talks, and the regional sporting event include:

  • Cabinet Approval & Bilateral Discussions: The Malaysian Cabinet reviewed aid deployment options during its Friday meeting, establishing top-level diplomatic channels with Indonesian leadership.
  • Indonesian Firefighting Obstacles: Indonesia’s deployment of 16,000 ground firefighters and specialized aircraft faces operational hurdles due to dense haze visibility drops and insufficient rain cloud density for artificial rainmaking.
  • Health Impacts in Malaysia: Ahmad Zahid emphasized that prolonged exposure to transboundary smoke continues to trigger adverse health effects across Malaysia, particularly among individuals suffering from allergies and respiratory conditions.
  • Bridge Run Upgraded to Full Marathon: The 2026 Sultan Nazrin Shah Bridge Run in Bagan Datuk drew 1,700 local and international runners across three divisions—the 5km category (759 runners), 21km half-marathon (575 runners), and 10km run (366 runners)—with organizers announcing plans to upgrade the event to a full marathon next year.
