ISTANBUL, Oct 19 – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Monday, October 19, 2026, initiating high-level diplomatic delegation talks focused on bilateral strategic ties and regional security, according to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB.
Lavrov arrived in the Iranian capital for an official visit aimed at expanding political, economic, and security coordination between the two sanction-hit nations.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed that Lavrov is also scheduled to hold a bilateral session with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
“The visit is part of ongoing bilateral consultations and efforts to follow up on agreements between the two countries,” Baqaei stated regarding the diplomatic schedule.
Deepening Moscow-Tehran Strategic Framework
Key facets of Russia and Iran’s expanding bilateral cooperation include:
- Executive Engagements: Lavrov and Araghchi led joint diplomatic delegations following initial one-on-one discussions at the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
- 20-Year Strategic Treaty: The meetings build upon the 20-year Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty signed in Moscow in January 2025 by President Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
- Scope of Cooperation: The bilateral treaty covers defense, security, energy infrastructure, trade expansion, and international transportation corridors.
- Defense & Diplomatic Parameters: While providing for close diplomatic and geopolitical alignment against Western sanctions, the agreement does not include a mutual defense obligation.
The talks underscore continuing alignment between Moscow and Tehran across international trade, energy, and defense sectors.
