KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 – Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has urged leaders and the public to discard stereotypes portraying young people as “entitled” or “spoiled,” emphasizing that today’s youth face fundamentally different socioeconomic and technological realities.

Speaking as a panelist at the 2026 International Young Future Leaders Summit (iFUTURE) Ministerial Forum in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, October 12, 2026, Azalina stressed that generational differences shape how young workers perceive their self-worth, career prospects, and expectations of fairness.

The forum, titled “Voices of Tomorrow: A Conversation on Leadership and Nation Building,” was organized by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and also featured Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir as a panelist.

Generational Differences, Leadership Principles, and Digital Advocacy

Azalina highlighted key themes regarding youth empowerment, workplace dynamics, and civic responsibility:

  • Evolving Youth Realities: Azalina noted that unlike past generations who faced different physical and communication barriers, today’s tech-native generation understands its value, expecting clarity, respect, and mutual accountability from employers.
  • Formative Personal Experience: Recalling a university experience where her advocacy over examination schedules disrupted her postgraduate plans at Cambridge University, Azalina credited the event as her catalyst for entering public life and shaping her core leadership philosophy.
  • Temporary Nature of Power: Emphasizing integrity in governance, Azalina reminded aspiring leaders that political power is temporary and must never be abused, describing leadership as a divine trust to serve the public interest.
  • Civic Action via Digital Means: Azalina called on university students to speak out against pressing national issues, citing the transboundary haze—which caused widespread school closures when API levels breached 200—as a prime opportunity for youth to utilize digital platforms rather than remaining silent.

The iFUTURE forum brought together student delegates and young leaders from across the region to discuss leadership, nation-building, and digital advocacy strategies.
