SHIZUOKA, Oct 2 – National track cycling icon Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang delivered a stellar performance to secure Malaysia’s eighth gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, winning the men’s keirin final at the Izu Velodrome in Shizuoka on Friday, October 2, 2026.
The 38-year-old veteran, affectionately known as the “Pocket Rocketman,” executed a tactical ride before unleashing a trademark burst of speed on the final bend to overtake China’s Li Zhiwei, who had surged ahead early in the final lap.
Li held on to claim the silver medal, while his teammate Xie Han captured the bronze. Malaysia’s second finalist in the event, Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, completed the race in fifth place.
Journey to the Final
Azizulhasni demonstrated strong form throughout the day, earning his spot in the final by finishing first in the second semi-final heat. Meanwhile, Shah Firdaus qualified after taking third place in the first semi-final heat.
The gold medal triumph further cements Azizulhasni’s legacy as one of Asia’s premier track cyclists and significantly boosts Malaysia’s overall medal tally at the 2026 Asian Games.
