Mohamad Hasan arrives New York UNGA 81

NEW YORK, Sept 23 – Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday morning (New York time) to lead Malaysia’s delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81).

He was received upon arrival at approximately 9:00 AM by Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Datuk Nadzirah Osman, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was accompanied by his wife, Raja Datin Seri Salbiah Tengku Nujumudin.

This marks the third consecutive year Mohamad has led the Malaysian delegation to the UN General Assembly since assuming office as Foreign Minister in December 2023.

The 81st session is convened under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All,” centering on restoring confidence in multilateralism amid shifting global geopolitical, economic, and technological landscapes. The General Debate takes place from Sept 22 to 28.

Mohamad is scheduled to deliver Malaysia’s national statement during the General Debate on Sept 26 at approximately 4:30 PM (New York time). His address is expected to cover core diplomatic priorities, including:

  • Multilateralism & International Law: Reinforcing global legal frameworks and rules-based international order.
  • Middle East Geopolitics: Addressing the question of Palestine and broader regional security challenges.
  • UN & Security Council Reform: Advocating for institutional governance reforms and supporting the UN80 initiative.
  • Sustainable Development: Closing global developmental disparities and furthering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Prior to delivering the national statement, Mohamad will participate in several high-level ministerial meetings beginning Sept 24. These include the Ministerial-Level Meeting of the Peacebuilding Commission, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Annual Coordination Meeting of Foreign Ministers, a ministerial session supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and a high-level dialogue addressing existential threats from sea-level rise.

During his visit, the Foreign Minister will also host an engagement dinner for the Malaysian diaspora residing, working, and studying in New York and surrounding areas on Sept 26.
