MACC Clarifies Former Tabung Haji Chairman Wore Lockup Uniform and Handcuffs by Choice

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has clarified that former Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim voluntarily chose to wear a purple lockup uniform and handcuffs during his court appearance on Tuesday, despite being advised otherwise by authorities and legal counsel.

In an official statement issued on Tuesday, the anti-graft agency noted that MACC officers, police escorts, and Abdul Azeez’s own defense counsel had explicitly advised him to change into civilian attire and informed him that handcuffs were unnecessary. The commission explained, “however, he insisted on wearing the lockup attire and handcuffs until the charge was read to him.”

Reiterating that no coercion took place, the agency added, “therefore, the MACC wishes to stress that the lockup outfit and handcuffs worn by him were not on the instructions or demand of any party, particularly the MACC.” Following the incident, the commission urged the public to refrain from spreading inaccurate information or engaging in baseless speculation regarding his appearance.

The clarification follows Abdul Azeez’s court appearance where he was charged with abusing his position as TH chairman 12 years ago to secure a chairmanship in a private company and convincing the TH Board of Directors to approve an RM193.5 million investment proposal in the same firm.

Abdul Azeez pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail at RM450,000 with two local sureties. As part of his additional bail conditions, he must report to the Kuala Lumpur MACC office every three months until the case reaches resolution. The court has set November 11 for mention and document submission.
