Petaling Jaya Flash Floods Submerge 223 Food Court Under Two Metres of Water Following Downpour

Petaling Jaya flash floods

KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 — A severe downpour across the Klang Valley this afternoon triggered widespread Petaling Jaya flash floods, leaving several commercial hubs submerged and trapping motorists and patrons. Among the hardest-hit areas was the iconic 223 Food Court, which saw water levels rise drastically within a short period.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Operations Division Assistant Director Ashrul Riezal Asbar reported that emergency responders acted quickly to the crisis. A specialized team from the Petaling Jaya Fire and Rescue Station rushed to the 223 Food Court after receiving an emergency call at 4.35 pm. Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered that the floodwaters had peaked at nearly two metres high.

“The water was on a receding trend when the firefighters arrived and no evacuation was conducted,” Ashrul Riezal said in an official statement today. He added that additional teams from the Damansara and Taman Tun Dr Ismail stations were actively deployed to rescue a vehicle stranded nearby, with a comprehensive damage report still pending.

The severe storm also compromised local infrastructure and caused significant property hazards. As of 5 pm, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department had responded to four emergency calls regarding fallen trees blockading local roads, though fortunately no casualties were reported.

Terrified traders and patrons took to social media to document the rapidly unfolding crisis inside the commercial area. A livestream broadcast on TikTok by trader account @dapurmamamar showed a desperate plea for emergency intervention. The merchant claimed that people had been trapped inside the venue since 3.50 pm, forcing customers to climb onto dining furniture as waters breached waist-height.

“The water rises very quickly here if it rains heavily. Electricity supply is also cut off,” the trader explained during the broadcast, highlighting the severe infrastructural vulnerability of the zone during intense cloudbursts.

The structural impact of the Petaling Jaya flash floods extended to main arterial roads, trapping commuters inside their vehicles. Another viral livestream broadcast by TikTok user @Sopan60 captured a harrowing scene near Phileo Damansara. The video showed a sedan carrying three passengers trapped in deep floodwaters, though the occupants managed to escape safely after alert passersby intervened to pull them from the vehicle before emergency services arrived.
