PARIS, July 17 — France has formally renewed its institutional backing for the International Criminal Court (ICC). The European power explicitly rejected aggressive assertions from the United States (US) administration claiming that the international judicial body compromises national self-determination.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Pascal Confavreux clarified the core jurisdiction of the tribunal to dismantle Washington’s legal arguments. He noted that the ICC remains zero threat to independent states because its statutory mandate focuses purely on prosecuting individual actors accused of the world’s most serious atrocities, rather than targetting sovereign governments.
“This does not change France’s position of support for the International Criminal Court, its resilience, and its fight against impunity and the most serious crimes,” Confavreux told reporters during a media briefing.
The diplomatic pushback highlights a growing transatlantic divide over global justice systems and international legal institutions. The French representative firmly condemned the rising political pressure directed at judicial staff. He stated that all external attacks and threats against ICC staff, officials, and others involved in the court’s work were completely unacceptable.
The explicit defense from Paris follows recent highly critical statements from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The top American diplomat launched a blistering critique against the tribunal, alleging it directly threatened US sovereignty. In response, Rubio announced that Washington would actively encourage allied countries to withdraw from the court. The US State Department has also launched a targeted diplomatic initiative aimed at limiting what it described as the ICC’s ability to challenge American authority.
The Hague-based independent tribunal was originally established in 2002 to systematically prosecute individuals accused of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression. While the US has historically refused to become a formal member state of the court, France remains among the primary global powers that finance and support its judicial work.
