KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — Malaysia and Thailand have strongly reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening bilateral defence cooperation while proactively addressing emerging security challenges across Southeast Asia.
The renewed security pact was solidified during a high-profile meeting between Malaysian Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and his Thai counterpart, Lieutenant General Adul Boonthumjaroen. The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) announced in a statement today that Adul’s introductory visit to Wisma Pertahanan was the cornerstone of his official two-day tour to Malaysia, which concluded today.
“The meeting witnessed the closeness of friendship between the two defence leaders of Malaysia and Thailand,” MINDEF noted in its statement.
During the session, Mohamed Khaled formally congratulated Adul on his recent appointment to the Thai defence portfolio, expressing his absolute confidence in Thailand’s continued success under the leadership of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Both defence chiefs also emphasized their mutual commitment to actively promoting long-term peace and stability throughout the wider Southeast Asian region.
In a significant diplomatic milestone, Bangkok lauded Kuala Lumpur’s ongoing mediation initiatives regarding neighboring geopolitical disputes.
“Thailand also expressed its support for Malaysia’s efforts in helping to defuse the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and recognised Malaysia’s proactive role in facilitating dialogue and fostering regional stability,” the ministry statement detailed.
To further explore technical and defence industry synergy, the Thai Defence Minister led a delegation to tour the facilities of the National Aerospace and Defence Industries (NADI) Group of Companies.
“The programme also included a visit to the company’s facilities which provided an opportunity for both parties to exchange views on potential areas of cooperation and explore future cooperation opportunities,” MINDEF added.
