Terengganu crush Penang 3-0 to keep AFC Cup hopes alive

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — Terengganu FC (TFC) bounced back from their FA Cup disappointment to crush bottom club Penang FC 3-0 at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak.

The three points earned today saw TFC, coached by Mohd Nafuzi Zain, strengthen its fourth position in the table, and keep the team’s hopes of qualifying for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC Cup) as the top three teams, very much alive.

In the match played under a heavy downpour, TFC opened accounts through a superb strike by Muhammad Faisal Halim in the 37th minute that gave Penang FC keeper Hafizul Hakim Khairul Nizam Jothy no chance.

TFC increased the lead on the stroke of halftime when Ivory Coast import Tchetche Kipre struck in front of the 4,000 odd fans who braved the rain to watch the match.

Kipre once again was on target in the final minute of the match to ensure a 3-0 win.

Meanwhile, up north Kedah Darul Aman FC scored a convincing 3-1 over Selangor FC at the Darul Aman Stadium in Alor Setar.

Taking advantage of home ground, Kedah kept pounding the Selangor defence and the pressure paid off in the 22nd minute when Cameroon import Ronald Ngah Wanja tucked in a freekick from Mahmoud Nayef Ahmad Almardi while Andorra import Marcos Vales Gonzalez headed in the second in the 30th minute.

Selangor fought back to reduce the deficit in the 33rd minute through Brazilian import Herlison Caion but Mohammad Fayadh Mohd Zulkifli Amin restored the two-goal advantage in the 90th minute.

TFC now in the fourth spot have 32 points after 18 matches while Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) are in top spot with 42 points followed by Sabah (36) and Negeri Sembilan (35).

Since JDT is expected to win the Super League title and earn a slot for the AFC Champions League, the second and third-placed teams are expected to earn slots for the AFC Cup.

JDT by virtue of winning the FA Cup has already earned a spot in the AFC Cup.
