CYBERJAYA, 23 June — 29 Barisan Nasional MPs signed a Statutory Declaration (SD) giving the mandate to Sembrong MP Datuk Seri Hishammudin Tun Hussein as their representative because they did not want to be used by others to support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and DAP.
According to a report by the online portal Suara.TV, an UMNO MP has confirmed the statement made by Datuk Seri Mohamad Nazri Aziz on the Statutory Declaration, but stated that the actual number, including other BN components, was 29 people.
The UMNO MP, who wished to remain anonymous said that the majority of BN MPs discussed the UMNO President’s meeting with the YDP Agong.
“We are worried and concerned that the UMNO President, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, will bring a letter expressing the support of UMNO MPs to Anwar Ibrahim when facing the YDP Agong.”
“In the SD, among others, we gave a mandate to Datuk Hisham to represent us in the event of another national leadership crisis. Datuk Hisham was given the mandate to state our stand that we do not support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and any cooperation with DAP. ”
The MP also rejected allegations that the SD expressed support for Hishammudin to become Deputy Prime Minister or Prime Minister.
Asked why such an SD was necessary, the Member of Parliament replied cynically, “we were sold out in October 2020; thus we don’t want to be played out again”
Despite declining to comment further, this comment is believed to refer to allegations that Ahmad Zahid sent a letter to the YDP Agong last year stating UMNO’s support for Anwar Ibrahim as the Prime Minister candidate.
The crisis of trust in Zahid culminated when a voice recording of Zahid and Anwar came to light after the last UMNO 2020 General Assembly. In the recording, a voice resembling Zahid clearly assured Anwar that the No Anwar and No DAP proposal was just a “tactical move”.
