KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 – Fourteen areas across Malaysia, including ten in Sarawak, recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings as of 9:00 AM on Tuesday due to ongoing haze conditions.
Data from the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System portal confirmed that Sibu registered the highest air pollution level in Sarawak with an API reading of 178, followed closely by Sri Aman at 169 and Mukah at 168.
Other affected locations in Sarawak recording unhealthy air quality levels include IPD Serian at 160, Kuching at 157, along with Samalaju, Bintulu, Kapit, and Sarikei, which all registered readings of 156. Samarahan recorded an API level of 155.
Beyond Sarawak, four other locations across Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah also crossed into the unhealthy threshold. Putrajaya recorded an API reading of 151, while Shah Alam registered 109, Nilai recorded 108, and Politeknik Kota Kinabalu in Sabah recorded 103.
Across the rest of the country, 51 monitoring stations recorded moderate API levels, while three areas maintained good air quality readings.
Under national environmental safety standards, API readings between 0 and 50 signify good air quality, 51 to 100 represent moderate levels, 101 to 200 denote unhealthy air, 201 to 300 indicate very unhealthy conditions, and readings of 301 or higher are classified as hazardous.
