{"id":9711,"date":"2021-05-30T12:14:02","date_gmt":"2021-05-30T04:14:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9711"},"modified":"2021-05-30T12:14:03","modified_gmt":"2021-05-30T04:14:03","slug":"dayak-community-forgoing-ngabang-tradition-for-a-good-cause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9711","title":{"rendered":"Dayak community forgoing &#8216;ngabang&#8217; tradition for a good cause"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUCHING, May 30&nbsp;&#8212;&nbsp;Gawai&nbsp;Dayak in Sarawak is often associated with&nbsp;various activities such&nbsp;as beauty&nbsp;pageants and&nbsp;\u2018ngabang\u2019&nbsp;(Gawai open house).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And although this is the second year in a row that the Dayak community has to skip such festive gatherings, they accept that it is a sacrifice everyone has to make in the fight against the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the&nbsp;activities that I\u2019m&nbsp;going to miss the most is definitely the&nbsp;gathering with all my relatives at my grandparents\u2019 house in Kampung Stass in&nbsp;Bau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I will also miss the ngabang because this is the only time we can go around and catch up with not only our relatives but also friends,&#8221; said trainee&nbsp;medical officer Grandy Mina Mihim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grandy, 26, said she will\u00a0also miss\u00a0the \u2018Kumang Gawai\u2019, a\u00a0contest\u00a0to choose the festival&#8217;s beauty queen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-30-at-12.11.58.png\" alt=\"dayak\" class=\"wp-image-9712\" width=\"485\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-30-at-12.11.58.png 586w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-30-at-12.11.58-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-30-at-12.11.58-187x100.png 187w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-30-at-12.11.58-350x188.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That&nbsp;is also the only time we get to see our Bidayuh beauties showcasing their traditional costumes from their respective sub-ethnic groups,&#8221; said Grandy, who was&nbsp;a contestant of past&nbsp;pageants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grandy&nbsp;said she will also miss&nbsp;local delicacies like Bidayuh&nbsp;food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I can&nbsp;imagine the taste of \u2018pogang\u2019 (lemang), which is eaten&nbsp;with \u2018tikasuom\u2019&nbsp;(fermented fish) sprinkled with chillies and lime,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, she fully agrees with the state government\u2019s&nbsp;decision to impose&nbsp;the&nbsp;Movement Control Order (MCO) throughout Sarawak&nbsp;from May 29&nbsp;until June 11. Gawai Dayak is celebrated on June 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is a global pandemic and&nbsp;cases keep increasing from day to day. Thus,&nbsp;it is&nbsp;better to (stay home) take care of ourselves and family than going out and be infected with the&nbsp;virus,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>School teacher Angela Ritikos, 57, shares Grandy\u2019s&nbsp;sentiments, saying she will&nbsp;definitely miss her family gatherings as those were occasions for family members to come home to Kuching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough I&#8217;m not happy with the lockdown, I honestly feel that it has to be done.
