{"id":9640,"date":"2021-05-25T09:47:44","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T01:47:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9640"},"modified":"2021-05-25T09:47:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T01:47:44","slug":"lrt-accident-shocks-the-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9640","title":{"rendered":"LRT accident shocks the nation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 \u00a0&#8212;\u00a0Two trains collided in a tunnel here on the Kelana Jaya LRT line on Monday night,\u00a0resulting in\u00a047 passengers seriously injured and 166 more sustaining minor injuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Photographs&nbsp;and videos shared on social media showing the LRT passengers injured, sitting, lying down, some even seen bleeding, in the 8.45 pm incident&nbsp;between the&nbsp;Kampung&nbsp;Baru Station and KLCC&nbsp;stations &nbsp;shocked the nation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident took place at a time when&nbsp;the country is&nbsp;already grappling with the&nbsp;COVID-19 pandemic,&nbsp;and the people&#8217;s focus shifted momentarily to the accident&nbsp;involving a train carrying passengers and&nbsp;another&nbsp;that was being test-driven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 213 passengers in one train were injured and sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital and several nearby hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dang Wangi police chief ACP Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said all the passengers were in a train traveling&nbsp;from the KLCC LRT station to Gombak LRT station, while the other train,&nbsp;with only one driver and no passengers, was from the Kampung Baru LRT Station and also headed to the Gombak LRT Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the scene, rescuers comprising the police,\u00a0Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Malaysian Armed Forces\u00a0worked hard to assist in the rescue work and evacuate\u00a0the victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-25-at-09.40.53.png\" alt=\"lrt\" class=\"wp-image-9641\" width=\"478\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-25-at-09.40.53.png 591w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-25-at-09.40.53-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-25-at-09.40.53-185x100.png 185w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-25-at-09.40.53-350x190.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 478px) 100vw, 478px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>All passengers were evacuated at about 9.50 pm and sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) and several nearby hospitals for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The HKL Emergency and Trauma Department was&nbsp;filled with anxious family members of the victims, but newsmen&nbsp;were not allowed to approach them&nbsp;for interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Service operator, Prasarana&nbsp;Bhd apologised for the inconvenience caused.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department director Nordin Pauzi said they had difficulty removing the victims because the tunnel was narrow.
