{"id":9507,"date":"2021-05-14T19:48:57","date_gmt":"2021-05-14T11:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9507"},"modified":"2021-05-14T19:48:58","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T11:48:58","slug":"us-says-un-security-council-to-meet-sunday-on-gaza-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9507","title":{"rendered":"US says UN Security Council to meet Sunday on Gaza, Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WASHINGTON, May 14 &#8212; The UN Security Council will meet this weekend to discuss the situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip, the US announced Thursday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anadolu Agency reported in announcing the Sunday meeting, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the UN envoy for US said the Biden administration &#8220;will continue to actively engage in diplomacy at the highest levels to try to de-escalate tensions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, her Twitter post did not specify whether the meeting would be held in an open or closed format, nor did the US mission immediately have a statement with additional details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-14-at-19.46.14.png\" alt=\"gaza\" class=\"wp-image-9508\" width=\"491\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-14-at-19.46.14.png 587w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-14-at-19.46.14-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-14-at-19.46.14-185x100.png 185w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-14-at-19.46.14-350x189.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Diplomats earlier told Anadolu Agency that the US blocked a public virtual meeting of the UN Security Council to address the escalating conflict. The nixed Friday meeting was requested by China, Norway and Tunisia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the US said &#8220;an open meeting tomorrow will not support these de-escalatory efforts,&#8221; according to the diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, the US blocked a Security Council statement regarding the spiraling violence as Israel continued to pound densely-populated Gaza with airstrikes amid continued rocket attacks from Palestinian groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nixed statement followed a second council briefing from UN Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Peace Tor Wennesland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It &#8220;expressed deep concern about the latest situation in Gaza and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities&#8221; and further &#8220;expressed concern about the tensions and violence in East Jerusalem, especially in and around the holy sites.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Council members demanded immediate cessation of all acts of violence, provocation, incitement and destruction. They called for respect for international law, including international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The death toll from Israel&#8217;s continuing offensive on Gaza has left 109 dead, including 28 children and 15 women, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. An additional 580 people have been injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven Israelis have been killed in recent violence &#8212; six in rocket attacks, in addition to a soldier who was killed when an anti-tank guided missile struck his jeep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tensions have been running high in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem over the past month as Israeli settlers have repeatedly clashed with residents following a court order for the eviction of Palestinian families in the area.
