{"id":9437,"date":"2021-05-08T23:29:01","date_gmt":"2021-05-08T15:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9437"},"modified":"2021-05-08T23:29:03","modified_gmt":"2021-05-08T15:29:03","slug":"malaysians-should-take-heed-of-covid-19-tsunami-in-india-avoid-similar-situation-health-dg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9437","title":{"rendered":"Malaysians should take heed of COVID-19 tsunami in India, avoid similar situation &#8211; Health DG"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>PUTRAJAYA, May 8&nbsp;&#8212;&nbsp;Malaysians have been&nbsp;advised to take heed of the COVID-19 tsunami in India, and avoid a similar situation from occurring here, by strictly complying&nbsp;with the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the sharp increase in the number of cases in India came following the government&#8217;s decision&nbsp;to loosen&nbsp;movement restrictions on March 7,&nbsp;after bringing the pandemic under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFollowing the announcement, many in the country&nbsp;did not comply with the SOP when the flexibility was given. Gatherings have taken place&nbsp;at beaches, at religious ceremonies and at weddings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Besides that, India has also held five state elections. They held a campaign involving 200,000 individuals without the use of face masks, nor any physical distancing,\u00a0so\u00a0the infection began spreading,&#8221; he said at the COVID-19 development press conference here today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-08-at-23.26.46.png\" alt=\"in india\" class=\"wp-image-9438\" width=\"506\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-08-at-23.26.46.png 587w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-08-at-23.26.46-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-08-at-23.26.46-181x100.png 181w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-08-at-23.26.46-350x193.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>India has recorded&nbsp;a total of 21.49 million cases so far, with&nbsp;1.57 million new cases in just the past week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham pointed out&nbsp;how important it was for Malaysia to gazette the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021 in January, which provided that no elections should be held during the emergency period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Noor Hisham said that with the Emergency Ordinance in place, three by-elections (PRK) were not held, namely in Batu Sapi, Bugaya and Gerik, while the Sarawak State Election (PRN) was also put on hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf the by-elections and Sarawak PRN&nbsp;were to be held, of course, there would be campaign rallies.
