{"id":9330,"date":"2021-04-29T15:35:10","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T07:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9330"},"modified":"2021-04-29T15:35:10","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T07:35:10","slug":"penang-port-eyes-50000-teus-transhipment-throughput-for-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9330","title":{"rendered":"Penang Port eyes 50,000 TEUs transhipment throughput for 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BUTTERWORTH, April 29 &#8212;&nbsp;Penang Port Sdn Bhd expects the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) &#8212;&nbsp;which was gazetted as a free commercial zone (FCZ) effective Feb&nbsp;1, 2021&nbsp;&#8212; will achieve transhipment throughput of 50,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transhipment, which is&nbsp;the shipment of goods or containers to an intermediate destination before being taken to another destination, would be one of the most&nbsp;impactful activity after the gazettement of NBCT as a FCZ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief executive officer V Sasedharan said Penang Port would leverage&nbsp;the FCZ status to reach greater heights as it would enable the port to be one&nbsp;of the focal points for shipping and transhipment activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe transhipment activity from the Bay of Bengal to Penang Port is one of the most&nbsp;lucrative opportunities identified by Penang Port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the year 2020, the Bay of Bengal throughput volume is estimated to be around 8.1 million TEUs. Soon, Penang Port plans to link up feeder operators in the Bay of Bengal with mainline operators,\u201d he told\u00a0a press conference here after witnessing NBCT receiving the first transhipment from Evergreen Marine Corp (Ever Chant) today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-15.32.19.png\" alt=\"penang port\" class=\"wp-image-9331\" width=\"468\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-15.32.19.png 590w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-15.32.19-300x187.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-15.32.19-160x100.png 160w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-15.32.19-350x218.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Also present was PenangPort Commission chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng and general manager Monaliza Suhaimi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sasedharan&nbsp;said Penang Port\u2019s&nbsp;strategic&nbsp;location enabled&nbsp;transhipment activities&nbsp;from the Bay of Bengal before Port Klang, adding that the port had an&nbsp;added advantage as it would be the first port to be contacted whenever any shipping lines enter&nbsp;the Straits of Malacca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u00a0said the 223 TEUs transhipment from Ever Chant today marked the start\u00a0of a new chapter as PenangPort would also cater for value-added activities such as high-tech warehousing,\u00a0thus spearheading\u00a0positive economic growth in the northern region of Malaysia.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To spur transhipment activity in the port, he said the port&nbsp;would offer various monetary incentives for shipping companies, including&nbsp;storage and special rates for handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;
