{"id":9312,"date":"2021-04-28T11:44:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T03:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9312"},"modified":"2021-04-28T11:44:02","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T03:44:02","slug":"students-affected-by-school-closures-may-lose-us180-in-expected-annual-income-adb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9312","title":{"rendered":"Students affected by school closures may lose US$180 in expected annual income &#8212; ADB"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 &nbsp;&#8212; Students affected by school closures in developing Asia stand to lose an average of US$180 (US$1=RM4.10), representing&nbsp;a 2.4 per cent&nbsp;decline, in expected annual earnings, said the Asian Development Bank (ADB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The present value of these future earning losses adds up to an estimated U$1.25 trillion, equivalent to 5.4 per cent&nbsp;of the region\u2019s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2020, the bank&nbsp;said in its flagship economic publication,&nbsp;Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In a more optimistic scenario for the effectiveness of remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, total losses are equivalent to U$0.8 trillion (3.6 percent\u00a0of 2020 GDP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But a pessimistic scenario puts the losses at U$1.8 trillion (7.6 per cent\u00a0of GDP),&#8221; it said, adding that learning and earning losses will rise the longer that schools remain closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-28-at-11.40.37.png\" alt=\"closures\" class=\"wp-image-9313\" width=\"482\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-28-at-11.40.37.png 589w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-28-at-11.40.37-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-28-at-11.40.37-185x100.png 185w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-28-at-11.40.37-350x189.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that learning losses will&nbsp;substantially reduce future productivity and earnings,&nbsp;ADB suggested that governments adopt policies&nbsp;to help mitigate the potential damage and ensure that education systems emerge from this pandemic better than they were before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said schools were closed to varying degrees across developing Asia, where in a quarter of the region\u2019s economies, schools were closed for 200\u2013300 days, and in another fifth for a year or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADB said only a handful of economies managed to keep schools open continuously. Remote learning strategies were deployed in most economies to keep students learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But many students are constrained by access to resources like computers and the internet.
