Putrajaya today reiterated its assurance that Parliament will be convened at the appropriate time, whether before or on Aug 1 when the state of emergency is slated to end, in the wake of a memorandum submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on ending the emergency declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, law minister Takiyuddin Hassan said the government took note of calls by some for Parliament to be convened despite the ongoing measures against Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe government is aware of its constitutional responsibilities to ensure the country\u2019s democratic process is guaranteed through Parliament sittings, but the priority at the moment is on efforts to ensure that the spread of Covid-19 can be fully contained, including protecting the health of MPs, officers and all those involved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Parlimen1_Mnow_100321-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"parliament\" class=\"wp-image-9274\" width=\"489\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Parlimen1_Mnow_100321-1024x682-1.jpg 1008w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Parlimen1_Mnow_100321-1024x682-1-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Parlimen1_Mnow_100321-1024x682-1-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Parlimen1_Mnow_100321-1024x682-1-175x100.jpg 175w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Parlimen1_Mnow_100321-1024x682-1-350x200.jpg 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Parlimen1_Mnow_100321-1024x682-1-800x457.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that Parliament would only be held on the advice of experts including from the health ministry and National Security Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs long as the emergency is in force, all parties including the opposition can still convey their views to the government through the approved channels, including through the special independent committee established under the emergency ordinance to advise the Agong on matters related to the emergency enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emergency was declared in January amid a sharp spike in Covid-19 infections across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It coincided with the second declaration of movement control order, known as MCO 2.0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had assured that the civilian government would continue to function despite the suspension of Dewan Rakyat debates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also said a general election would be called at the end of the emergency subject to improvements in the Covid-19 situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Takiyuddin today said there should be no suspicions of abuse of power as the government is functioning as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis includes the aspect of administrative monitoring by enforcement authorities, especially the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the National Audit Department, and the Public Accounts Committee,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernama.com\/en\/general\/news.php?id=1955899\">Bernama<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kuala Lumpur, 26 April &#8212;
