{"id":9024,"date":"2021-04-07T11:08:22","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T03:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9024"},"modified":"2021-04-07T11:08:23","modified_gmt":"2021-04-07T03:08:23","slug":"imf-maintains-malaysias-gdp-growth-at-6-5-pct-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=9024","title":{"rendered":"IMF maintains Malaysia&#8217;s GDP growth at 6.5 pct this year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, April 7\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0The International Monetary Fund (IMF) maintains\u00a0its forecast on Malaysia\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP) growth this year at 6.5 per cent, according to its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) report published today.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Themed&nbsp;\u201cManaging Divergent Recoveries\u201d, the report also stated that the country\u2019s economy is expected to grow at 6.0 per cent in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IMF expects the country\u2019s unemployment rate to drop\u00a0to 3.8 percent this year before going further down to 3.6 percent in 2022, as compared to 4.5 percent in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its&nbsp;Country Report released last month, IMF projected Malaysia\u2019s&nbsp;growth to rebound to 6.5 per cent in 2021, driven by strong recovery in the manufacturing and construction sectors, and the impact of the vaccination rollout in February.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, IMF projects\u00a0the global economy to grow at 6.0 per cent in 2021 and\u00a0moderating to 4.4 per cent in 2022, after an estimated contraction of \u20133.3 per cent in 2020,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-07-at-11.05.26.png\" alt=\"imf\" class=\"wp-image-9025\" width=\"529\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-07-at-11.05.26.png 585w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-07-at-11.05.26-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-07-at-11.05.26-183x100.png 183w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-07-at-11.05.26-350x191.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe contraction for 2020 is 1.1 percentage points smaller than projected in the October 2020 WEO, reflecting the higher-than-expected growth&nbsp;out turns in the second half of 2020 for most regions after lockdowns were eased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe projections for 2021 and 2022 are 0.8 percentage point and 0.2 percentage point stronger than in the previous forecast, reflecting additional fiscal support in a few large economies and the anticipated vaccine-powered recovery in the second half of the year,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This pace, it said, reflects continued adaptation of all sectors of the economy to the challenging health situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said the strength of the projected recovery varied&nbsp;across countries, depending on the severity of the health crisis, extent of domestic disruptions to activity (related to countries\u2019 reliance on contact-intensive sectors), exposure to cross-border spillovers, and importantly, effectiveness of policy support to limit persistent damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeyond 2022 global growth is projected to moderate to 3.3 per cent into the medium term.
