KOTA KINABALU, March 12 \u2014 Fire\u00a0broke out in\u00a0the water village of Kampung Lok Urai, Pulau Gaya\u00a0here, last night destroying 73 stilt houses and leaving\u00a0more than 200 people\u00a0homeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), in a statement today said 40 fire firefighters from the Kota Kinabalu, Lintas and Penampang stations were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call at 8.32 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUpon arrival, the\u00a0fire\u00a0was still\u00a0raging and the\u00a0fire-fighting operation was\u00a0conducted\u00a0using\u00a0an\u00a0open water source. Firefighters\u00a0managed\u00a0to control the\u00a0fire\u00a0from spreading to 757 houses in the surrounding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe operation to put out the fire ended at 12.37 am and\u00a0no injuries or casualties\u00a0were reported,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Sabah Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, in a separate statement said two temporary evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 79 victims from 14 families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said that 58 victims from 12 families were housed at Dewan Sembulan while 21 other victims involving two families were placed at Dewan Serbaguna Likas here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
