{"id":8544,"date":"2021-03-08T12:54:40","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T04:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=8544"},"modified":"2021-03-08T12:54:41","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T04:54:41","slug":"malaysia-records-highest-women-participation-in-senior-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=8544","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia records highest women participation in senior leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 &#8212;\u00a0The number of women holding senior leadership positions in Malaysia\u00a0has increased to a record-high of 37 percent,\u00a0despite\u00a0the\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0pandemic affecting global economies, according\u00a0to\u00a0Grant\u00a0Thornton\u2019s\u00a0annual\u00a0Women\u00a0in\u00a0Business report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grant Thornton Malaysia PLT\u2019s\u00a0National Tax Practice leader, Seah Siew Yun said\u00a0the figure is\u00a0also above the global\u00a0figure of 31 percent, surpassing the\u00a0important 30 percent threshold &#8211;\u00a0which, according to research, is\u00a0the minimum representation needed to change decision-making processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeeing the proportion of women leaders in Malaysia rise from 31 per cent&nbsp;last year to 37 per cent&nbsp;this year is encouraging,\u201d she said in a statement today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report said the\u00a0number\u00a0of women in operational executive-level managers (C-suite) roles in Malaysia has increased year-on-year, with the proportion of female chief finance officers rising by 12 percentage points (pp) to 41 per cent, female chief marketing officers (+14 pp to 36 per cent) and female chief information officers (+3pp to 20 per cent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-08-at-12.50.50.png\" alt=\"women\" class=\"wp-image-8545\" width=\"497\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-08-at-12.50.50.png 584w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-08-at-12.50.50-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-08-at-12.50.50-184x100.png 184w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-08-at-12.50.50-350x191.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 497px) 100vw, 497px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the proportion of women holding chief executive officer positions had slightly declined by 5pp to 10 per cent, the report said, noting that this has been trending&nbsp;downwards since 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of women in leadership positions in the ASEAN region also showed positive growth,&nbsp;from 35 per cent last year to 38 per cent in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also noted that Malaysian businesses are taking positive actions to improve the gender balance of their leadership team, including&nbsp;creating an inclusive culture (54 per cent), ensuring equal access to developmental work opportunities (48 per cent), and providing mentoring and coaching (47 per cent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRecognising the importance of&nbsp;gender-balanced leadership team, more businesses are now walking the talk, and&nbsp;it is encouraging to see more businesses placing a priority in creating an inclusive culture in their workplace,\u201d said Seah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the number of businesses taking such&nbsp;initiatives has&nbsp;increased from 17 per cent last year to 54 per cent&nbsp;in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the number of women in leadership roles has grown, she noted the&nbsp;COVID-19 pandemic\u2019s impact on women, particularly working mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report revealed&nbsp;that 56 per cent&nbsp;of respondents in Malaysia agree that in their respective organisations, the new working practices due to the pandemic&nbsp;would&nbsp;benefit women\u2019s career trajectories in the long-term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBreaking the 30 per cent barrier certainly does represent progress \u2013 having grown from 23 per cent since 14 years ago when we first started tracking this \u2013 but these gains can easily be lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReassuringly, 85 per cent&nbsp;of businesses in Malaysia say they are taking action to ensure the engagement&nbsp;and inclusion of their employees against the negative backdrop of the pandemic,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;
