KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11 — The government has allowed five economic sectors to operate during the Movement Control Order (MCO) which will be implemented for a period of 14 days starting Wednesday, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister said the sectors were industrial and manufacturing, construction, services, trade and distribution, as well as plantations and commodities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese\u00a0sectors are\u00a0allowed to operate because of their\u00a0role in supporting the tasks\u00a0of supplying basic necessities such as food, beverages, and\u00a0household items, as well as personal care, Personal Protective Equipment equipment, medical devices and medicines to health workers, international trade activities, in ensuring uninterrupted supply chains and supporting\u00a0critical infrastructure and emergency work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said this when delivering a special address on the implementation of the MCO which was broadcast live today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister said only 30 per cent of employees in the management group were allowed to be in the office while the needs of the support group would be determined by the employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the specified number of employees should take into account strict adherence to the stipulated standard operating procedures (SOPs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Stringent action will be taken against any employers who violate the SOPs and cause the spread of the COVID-19 infections in the workplace, based on the law, including closing the premises,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muhyiddin said the Ministry of International Trade and Industry would detail the types of services categorised as essential economic sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For sectors or services that are not listed as essential economic sectors, he said working from home instructions will take effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All employers must comply with the directive to reduce movements within the community, especially in high-density areas, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
