Abd Rahim"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29&nbsp;&#8212; The previous government&#8217;s decision to abolish the Goods and Services Tax (GST)&nbsp;has to some extent&nbsp;affected the country&#8217;s revenue, said&nbsp;Deputy Finance Minister I Datuk Abd Rahim Bakri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said this was because the country faced a&nbsp;revenue shortfall when GST was abolished and replaced with the&nbsp;Sales and Service&nbsp;Tax (SST).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;GST was introduced in 2015 before the then government decided to abolish the tax system in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Judging from\u00a0the data, GST collection was\u00a0RM44 billion a year and the total during its implementation was\u00a0RM133.1 billion while SST collection was just RM21 billion annually,\u201d he said when winding up the debate on the Sales Tax (Amendment) Bill 2020 in Dewan Negara here today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1cee9ce7bab5c728a0402275b1e89a8c5feacdf64f85f-1024x582.jpg\" alt=\"gst\" class=\"wp-image-7546\" width=\"453\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1cee9ce7bab5c728a0402275b1e89a8c5feacdf64f85f-1024x582.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1cee9ce7bab5c728a0402275b1e89a8c5feacdf64f85f-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1cee9ce7bab5c728a0402275b1e89a8c5feacdf64f85f-768x436.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1cee9ce7bab5c728a0402275b1e89a8c5feacdf64f85f-176x100.jpg 176w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1cee9ce7bab5c728a0402275b1e89a8c5feacdf64f85f-350x199.jpg 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1cee9ce7bab5c728a0402275b1e89a8c5feacdf64f85f-800x455.jpg 800w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1cee9ce7bab5c728a0402275b1e89a8c5feacdf64f85f.jpg 1049w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He said&nbsp;the GST collection was higher as the taxation system was more comprehensive and charged on all taxable goods and services at all stages, compared to SST,&nbsp;which was deemed a single-stage tax and&nbsp;imposed only on manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;About 597,000 people registered under GST while only 46,519 registered under SST&#8230;&nbsp;and some 12,000 types of products were taxable under GST but&nbsp;only 6,000 items under SST,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, Abd Rahim admitted that there was a weakness in&nbsp;the implementation of GST, which has indirectly affected the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the government would consider&nbsp;the views and acceptance of all parties including the people on the possible reintroduction&nbsp;of&nbsp;GST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;
