LANGKAWI, Dec 7  — The Kubang Badak Biogeotrail, located some 30 km away from Kuah town, is set to offer visitors a new experience with 12 geosites that will bring them the wonders of unique geological, biological and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many might have visited the mangroves around this legendary island such as Kilim Karst Geoforest Park or Tanjung Rhu, but Kubang Badak Biogeotrail is no less exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tourist guide Othman Ayeb said previosuly, Kubang Badak was only known as a fishermen\u2019s village but studies conducted by many researchers discovered a variety of unique biological, cultural and geological attractions which have tremendous tourism potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to Bernama recently, he said visitors can start their biogeotrail excursion at the Kubang Badak Fishermen Jetty by taking a boat or kayak ride\u00a0along Sungai\u00a0Kubang Badak or Sungai Siam\u00a0beneath a canopy of mangrove trees before visiting the\u00a0geosites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are 12 geosites here, three of which are the main tourist attractions, namely Bukit Menora; an old charcoal chamber site in Kampung Siam and Gua Pinang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile on their boat or kayak ride, visitors will get to see Bukit Menora which is a mogote<\/em>, a geological term for a steep-sided hill composed of either limestone, marble or dolomite,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Othman, who is an Associate Fellow at the Langkawi Research Centre of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, visitors would also be taken to Kampung Siam to see for themselves an old charcoal chamber site, believed to be over 100 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis site shows that charcoal industry had once become a\u00a0source of income for the Siamese community around Kampung KubangBadak,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With almost 24 years of experience as tourist guide, Othman said Gua Pinang was another must-visit destination for tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVisitors need to take a 10-minute walk from a small jetty to get to the cave. Gua Pinang is the remains of an ancient sea cave formed by waves when the sea was 15 metre (above its current level), some 6,000 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVisitors can also see piles of ancient seashells around the cave,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Sungai KubangBadak Fishermen\u2019s\u00a0Cooperative secretary, Sabri Musa, said besides the three sites, other\u00a0geosites were Kampung Kubang Badak, Kubang Badak Fisherman Jetty, Pulau Kubang Badak, Siam River, hot spring, Jemuruk Island Cambrian\u00a0fossil site, Tanjung Buta,\u00a0titik pandang landskap<\/em>\u00a0and sand bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBesides visiting the 12 geosites, visitors can also take part in snorkelling activity at Pulau Dangli if the weather condition permits,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
