{"id":7022,"date":"2020-11-27T12:48:56","date_gmt":"2020-11-27T04:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=7022"},"modified":"2020-11-27T12:49:00","modified_gmt":"2020-11-27T04:49:00","slug":"simultaneous-by-elections-for-gerik-and-bugaya-on-jan-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=7022","title":{"rendered":"Simultaneous by-elections for Gerik and Bugaya on Jan 16"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>PUTRAJAYA, Nov 27 &nbsp;&#8212; Simultaneous by-elections&nbsp;for both the Gerik parliamentary seat in Perak and Bugaya state seat in Sabah have been set for Jan 16, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Announcing this, Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said the nomination for both by-elections has also been set for Jan 4, while early voting on Jan 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two by-elections have to be held due to the unexpected vacancies of the seats following the death of the respective incumbents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incumbent of Gerik seat,&nbsp;Datuk Hasbullah Osman died on Nov 16, while the incumbent for Bugaya state seat,&nbsp;Manis Muka Mohd Darah, breathed her last on Nov 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hasbullah won the Gerik seat with a 5,528-vote majority in the 14th\u00a0General Election, while Manis Muka retained her\u00a0Bugaya state seat by defeating her six opponents\u00a0with a 6,005-vote majority in the state election on Sept 26 this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/8121b00e10294d90c829783fa28adc2c5f5ca3f965848-1024x579.jpg\" alt=\"bugaya\" class=\"wp-image-7023\" width=\"520\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/8121b00e10294d90c829783fa28adc2c5f5ca3f965848-1024x579.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/8121b00e10294d90c829783fa28adc2c5f5ca3f965848-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/8121b00e10294d90c829783fa28adc2c5f5ca3f965848-768x434.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/8121b00e10294d90c829783fa28adc2c5f5ca3f965848-177x100.jpg 177w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/8121b00e10294d90c829783fa28adc2c5f5ca3f965848-350x198.jpg 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/8121b00e10294d90c829783fa28adc2c5f5ca3f965848-800x452.jpg 800w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/8121b00e10294d90c829783fa28adc2c5f5ca3f965848.jpg 1062w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Abdul Ghani said the campaign period for both by-elections was set for 12 days beginning after the announcement of the names of candidates until&nbsp;11.59 pm on Jan 16.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe EC is expecting 70 per cent voter turnout.
