The US was represented by its National Security Advisor Robert C. O\u2019Brien at the summit, held virtually due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The summit is chaired by Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in his capacity as ASEAN Chair 2020 under the theme \u201cCohesive and Responsive ASEAN.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the issue of the South China Sea, Hishammuddin underlined the importance of common sense, rationality, cool-heads; and for peace, security and stability to prevail in the maritime zones at this moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe last thing on our minds right now is to be embroiled in a situation that would hamper all our efforts thus far,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Malaysia, he added, firmly stands by its position that the issue must be resolved peacefully and constructively, in accordance with the universally recognised principles of international law, including the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, Hishammuddin said Malaysia remained committed to tackling the threat of terrorism and violent extremism by addressing the root causes, strengthening policies, legal frameworks and enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This he said, requires strengthened bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c…we must remain vigilant, even as our efforts are focused on COVID-19 at the moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the situation in the Korean Peninsula, he said Malaysia remained consistent on three matters \u2013 the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, adherence to relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions, and resumption of dialogue between the relevant parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The US has been engaging with ASEAN as dialogue partner since 1977.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ASEAN-US Dialogue Relations is elevated to strategic level with the adoption of the Joint Statement on the ASEAN-US Strategic Partnership at the 3rd ASEAN-US Summit in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ASEAN, established in 1967, comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
