{"id":6010,"date":"2020-09-20T17:59:06","date_gmt":"2020-09-20T09:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=6010"},"modified":"2020-09-20T17:59:11","modified_gmt":"2020-09-20T09:59:11","slug":"iwk-denies-claims-of-polluting-sungai-gong-suspect-illegal-waste-dumping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=6010","title":{"rendered":"IWK denies claims of polluting Sungai Gong, suspect illegal waste dumping"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 &#8212; Indah Water Consortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) today said the incident of black colored water found\u00a0in\u00a0Sungai Gong, Rawang, was not due to\u00a0effluent discharge from the\u00a0Rawang Integrated Industrial Park\u00a0Sewage Treatment Plant (GBK134) as reported\u00a0by media yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, its\u00a0chief executive officer Narendran Maniam said, the company has identified the presence of yellow-colored\u00a0non-sewage waste\u00a0inside the plant&#8217;s intake chamber which caused the final\u00a0effluent\u00a0to be in polluted with thick yellow color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;IWK staff\u00a0at the plant are still monitoring and controlling the sewage intake into the plant. he said in a statement here, today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yesterday, the media reported that the Selangor Water Management Board\u00a0(Luas) received\u00a0a report on an incident that the water in Sungai Gong, Rawang had\u00a0turned\u00a0black without the presence of odor,\u00a0suspected to have been caused by dyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On\u00a0further investigations, Luas found\u00a0discolored and foamy effluent discharge, from area 5 IWK GBK 134 plant, in Rawang Industrial Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disappointed with the claim, Narendran said the matter could confuse the public besides causing them to accuse&nbsp;IWK, although the real source might have been caused by illegal dumping of waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are very&nbsp;disappointed for being frequently made as an&nbsp;easy target on&nbsp;any water pollution incident such as this one, without detailed inspection or reporting the information completely,&#8221;&nbsp;he said, adding that&nbsp;the sewage treatment plant was designed to treat sewage and is unable to treat&nbsp;chemical or&nbsp;other forms of waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added&nbsp;that illegal dumping of non-sewage&nbsp;waste is an offence under the Water Services Industry Act 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8212;
