{"id":5443,"date":"2020-08-10T22:30:17","date_gmt":"2020-08-10T14:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=5443"},"modified":"2020-08-10T22:30:20","modified_gmt":"2020-08-10T14:30:20","slug":"ahmad-zahid-pleads-not-guilty-to-14-amended-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=5443","title":{"rendered":"Ahmad Zahid pleads not guilty to 14 amended charges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8212; Former deputy prime minister&nbsp;Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi&nbsp;today pleaded not guilty at the High Court here to 12 counts of amended criminal breach of trust charges and two more amended corruption charges involving&nbsp;Yayasan Akalbudi funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judge&nbsp;Collin Lawrence Sequerah&nbsp;ordered&nbsp;the charges to be read to&nbsp;Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, after allowing the prosecution\u2019s application to amend the 14 charges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amendment to the CBT charges involves the inclusion of the word \u2018dominion\u2019 in charges one to 10 as well 19 and 20, while the word \u2018additional\u2019 was omitted in\u00a0corruption charges 14 and 15.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/64cfa0baeff65295415704469a31d3535eeb1eadd60cf-1024x570.jpg\" alt=\"not\" class=\"wp-image-5444\" width=\"424\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/64cfa0baeff65295415704469a31d3535eeb1eadd60cf-1024x570.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/64cfa0baeff65295415704469a31d3535eeb1eadd60cf-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/64cfa0baeff65295415704469a31d3535eeb1eadd60cf-768x427.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/64cfa0baeff65295415704469a31d3535eeb1eadd60cf-180x100.jpg 180w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/64cfa0baeff65295415704469a31d3535eeb1eadd60cf-350x195.jpg 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/64cfa0baeff65295415704469a31d3535eeb1eadd60cf-800x445.jpg 800w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/64cfa0baeff65295415704469a31d3535eeb1eadd60cf.jpg 1064w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 424px) 100vw, 424px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the 12 amended charges, Ahmad Zahid, in his capacity as a Yayasan Akalbudi trustee entrusted\u00a0with dominion over a property belonging to the foundation, is alleged to have committed\u00a0CBT involving RM31 million belonging to Yayasan Akalbudi\u00a0at the Affin Bank Berhad branch in Jalan Bunus off Jalan Masjid India here, between Jan 13, 2014,\u00a0and Dec 23, 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is charged under Section 409 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of &nbsp;20 years, and with whipping, and fine, upon conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the amendments to the corruption charges, Ahmad Zahid&nbsp;is alleged to have accepted bribes from the director of&nbsp;Data Sonic Group Berhad, as an inducement in his capacity as Home Minister then, that resulted in the company being appointed to carry out&nbsp;the acquisition of the supply of passport chips for a period of five years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bagan Datuk member of parliament is alleged to have committed the offences&nbsp;at&nbsp;the Maybank branch,&nbsp;Dataran Maybank&nbsp;in Jalan Maarof, Bangsar here on April 26, 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The charges under&nbsp;Section 16 (a) (B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act (MACC) 2009,&nbsp;punishable under Section 24 (1) of the same act, provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, Ahmad Zahid\u2019s counsel,&nbsp;Hisyam Teh Poh Teik,&nbsp;said the defence disagreed with the amendments as they had been&nbsp;notified quite late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were taken by surprise and it was just conveyed to us this morning. We cannot consent with the application\u2026 At the same time, we would like to inform the court that we would like to recognise our rights under Section 162 of the Criminal Procedure&nbsp;&nbsp;Code (CPC) &nbsp;to recall witnesses.
