JOHOR BAHRU, July 30 — Malaysia and Singapore will “meet” on the Johor Causeway today to “symbolically” seal their agreement to proceed with the Rapid Transit System (RTS) project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00a0Prime Minister Tan Sri\u00a0Muhyiddin\u00a0Yassin will meet his Singapore counterpart,\u00a0Prime Minister Lee\u00a0Hsien\u00a0Loong, to symbolize\u00a0the sealing\u00a0of the agreement by both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the brief meeting, Malaysia will also be represented by Transport Minister\u00a0\u00a0Datuk\u00a0Seri Ir Dr. Wee Ka\u00a0Siong; Senior Minister\u00a0Datuk\u00a0Seri Mohamed\u00a0Azmin\u00a0Ali, who is also International Trade and Industry Minister,\u00a0 and Foreign Minister\u00a0Datuk\u00a0Seri\u00a0Hishammuddin\u00a0Tun Hussein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Ir Hasni Mohammad is also scheduled to be present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, Singapore will be represented by its Transport Minister \u00a0Ong Ye Kung, Foreign Minister\u00a0Dr. Vivian\u00a0Balakrishnan,\u00a0and former Transport Minister\u00a0Khaw\u00a0Boon Wan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting is considered historical and symbolic as this is the first meeting between\u00a0Muhyiddin\u00a0and Lee on the\u00a0Johor\u00a0Causeway, which is regarded\u00a0as the busiest land route in the world with 350,000 travelers daily before the enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is also the first time\u00a0Muhyiddin\u00a0will meet Lee face-to-face since becoming Malaysia\u2019s eighth Prime Minister last March 1, while Lee himself was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Singapore last\u00a0July 27, after his party, the People’s Action Party (PAP), won in the recent general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After three postponements, Malaysia and Singapore will finally seal the agreement to proceed with the RTS project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The RTS, which is an alternative to reducing congestion on the\u00a0Johor\u00a0Causeway, includes the construction of a four-kilometer rail line between\u00a0Bukit\u00a0Chagar\u00a0in\u00a0Johor\u00a0Bahru\u00a0and Woodlands in Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The RTS project has gone through a series of discussions under three Malaysian prime ministers and is expected to cost about RM3.7 billion, with the specifications having been agreed upon by Malaysia and Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two-phase project is expected to begin in 2021 and will be completed by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
