KUALA LUMPUR, July 13  — Former Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun has been elected as the 10th Dewan Rakyat Speaker today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Azhar, 58, is the sole candidate nominated for the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister\u00a0Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin tabled the motion proposing for Azhar to be elected as the new Speaker in accordance with Standing Order\u00a04(1) of the Dewan Rakyat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the second motion he tabled today after the first that called for Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof to vacate his post was passed after 111 MPs voted for and 109 against.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One MP was absent, and another one abstained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hereby propose that Datuk Azhar Azizan @ Harun be elected as Dewan Rakyat Speaker in accordance with Standing Order 4(1), and I have made sure that he is willing to serve if elected,\u201d said Muhyiddin when tabling the motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Azhar, 58, was appointed as EC chairman on Sept 21, 2018, in place of Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He resigned from the post on June 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
