SERDANG, June 24 — The government is formulating the Tuna Industry Development Strategy 2020-2030 in the quest to grow\u00a0the industry into\u00a0one of the country’s new sources of wealth, said director-general of fisheries Datuk Munir Mohd Nawi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the plan contained 10 strategies and initiatives for the development and management of the country\u2019s tuna industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of\u00a02019, he said\u00a017 fishing vessels and a carrier, which were licensed to\u00a0operate\u00a0in the Indian Ocean, recorded a total catch of 2,760.60 tonnes worth RM35 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u00a0said\u00a0the country\u2019s fishes are\u00a0divided into two categories, namely oceanic tuna which are\u00a0found in the international,\u00a0Sabah and Labuan waters; and nectar tuna, which\u00a0are small-sized species caught in the country\u2019s exclusive economic zone\u00a0(ZEE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ports of Penang and Langkawi have been listed by the Department of Fisheries\u00a0as landing ports for vessels operating in the Indian Ocean, he told reporters after attending a\u00a0promotion on\u00a0tuna products for\u00a0COVID-19 frontliners at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) here today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was\u00a0officiated by Deputy Agriculture and Food Industries \u00a0Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Hamzah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahmad said 5,000 tuna satay\u00a0were distributed to the frontliners\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0low-risk Covid-19 Quarantine\u00a0and Treatment Centre\u00a0at MAEPS\u00a0in appreciation of their\u00a0contribution\u00a0in tackling the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahmad said\u00a0the satay was introduced by the Department of Fisheries\u00a0during the Malaysia Agriculture,\u00a0Horticulture\u00a0and Agrotourism Show (MAHA) 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
