{"id":4306,"date":"2020-06-15T01:28:36","date_gmt":"2020-06-14T17:28:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=4306"},"modified":"2020-06-15T01:31:06","modified_gmt":"2020-06-14T17:31:06","slug":"single-mom-sets-up-ketupat-palas-business-from-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=4306","title":{"rendered":"Single mom sets up ketupat palas business from home"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KOTA BHARU, June 14 &nbsp;&#8212; The implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) following the COVID-19 pandemic&nbsp;since mid-March has provided a window of opportunity for the public, especially housewives, to start their business from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A check by Bernama at Tanjung Chat here today found that a single mother of seven took the opportunity to start a frozen \u2018ketupat palas\u2019 (glutinous rice wrapped inside a diamond-shaped pouch made from&nbsp;fan palm leaves<em>)&nbsp;<\/em>business and&nbsp;marketed it online to customers&nbsp;and distributors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the visit, Shamsiah Ibrahim, 64, along with her daughter&nbsp;Noorhayati Ahmad, 38 and a neighbor, Nik Hasnah Nik Mat, 64, were putting cooked glutinous rice into the&nbsp;pouches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/d27e0bc060b4cd27e3f1b918665151d25ee6420123b3f-1024x561.jpg\" alt=\"ketupat\" class=\"wp-image-4307\" width=\"518\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/d27e0bc060b4cd27e3f1b918665151d25ee6420123b3f-1024x561.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/d27e0bc060b4cd27e3f1b918665151d25ee6420123b3f-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/d27e0bc060b4cd27e3f1b918665151d25ee6420123b3f-768x421.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/d27e0bc060b4cd27e3f1b918665151d25ee6420123b3f-182x100.jpg 182w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/d27e0bc060b4cd27e3f1b918665151d25ee6420123b3f-350x192.jpg 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/d27e0bc060b4cd27e3f1b918665151d25ee6420123b3f-800x438.jpg 800w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/d27e0bc060b4cd27e3f1b918665151d25ee6420123b3f.jpg 1073w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Shamsiah, who&nbsp;starts&nbsp;cooking the glutinous rice as early as 4 am every day,&nbsp;said the cooking process was done with her other daughter Norzarin, 37,&nbsp;before leaving for work at an engineering company here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The task of weaving and filling up the pouch starts at 8 am and can last through the night,&#8221; she said, adding that they were able to prepare about 10 kg of&nbsp;glutinous rice which could produce 1,400 ketupat palas&nbsp;a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shamsiah produces six varieties of ketupat palas such as salty, sweet, unseasoned, with peanut, with serunding (shredded meat-based product using chicken, beef, or fish)&nbsp;and black glutinous rice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Each type of ketupat palas is boxed into a pack&nbsp;of 20 and is priced at RM16 to RM24 per&nbsp;pack,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the frozen ketupat palas were shipped to Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Pahang and had even entered the London market during the fasting month last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Before the MCO, it&nbsp;was the main meal during Aidilfitri and Aidiladha as well as at kenduri gatherings due to its arduous preparations, but now, it is a meal offered to guests regularly,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shamsiah also added that she would&nbsp;continue her ketupat palas business following encouraging&nbsp;demands&nbsp;from individuals and distributors especially in Johor and Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked on how she started the business, Shamsiah said it happened by chance when a supplier failed to deliver the order placed by Norzarin for 2,000 pieces four years ago which forced them to make the ketupat palas themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, she said,&nbsp;at that time, the order was for the celebrations of&nbsp;Aidilfitri and Aidiladha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Shamsiah, each week six large boxes were delivered to Johor and Kuala Lumpur and two boxes each to&nbsp;Pahang and Selangor.
