{"id":4228,"date":"2020-06-13T10:58:58","date_gmt":"2020-06-13T02:58:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=4228"},"modified":"2020-06-15T12:47:17","modified_gmt":"2020-06-15T04:47:17","slug":"harumanis-grow-successfully-in-terengganu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=4228","title":{"rendered":"Harumanis grown successfully in Terengganu, farmers to benefit"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12 mt-4 px-sm-0 px-md-5 px-lg-15 text-dark text-justify\">\n<p>SETIU, June 13 &#8212;\u00a0Believe it or not, the harumanis mango which grows abundantly in northern Malaysia has also been thriving in BRIS (beach ridges interspersed with swales) soil in Terengganu for the past 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>Following the success of a 2016 Terengganu Agriculture Department experiment in growing Mangifera indica Linn at Pusat Pembangunan Komoditi Rhu Tapai, Terengganu\u00a0Agriculture, Agro-Based Industries and Rural Development Committee\u00a0chairman, Dr. Azman Ibrahim, ordered a census to be carried out in districts where this sandy soil is typically found.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4229\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3d3c273805c7fbeee1010e18258f802e5ee43a059bf52.jpg\" alt=\"harumanis\" width=\"860\" height=\"583\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3d3c273805c7fbeee1010e18258f802e5ee43a059bf52.jpg 860w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3d3c273805c7fbeee1010e18258f802e5ee43a059bf52-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3d3c273805c7fbeee1010e18258f802e5ee43a059bf52-768x521.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3d3c273805c7fbeee1010e18258f802e5ee43a059bf52-148x100.jpg 148w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3d3c273805c7fbeee1010e18258f802e5ee43a059bf52-350x237.jpg 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3d3c273805c7fbeee1010e18258f802e5ee43a059bf52-800x542.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarang, Kuala Nerus, and Kuala Terengganu were surveyed and in each, we found about 100 harumanis trees aged between 30 and 40 years which fruit three times a year,\u201d he told Bernama.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12 mt-4 px-sm-0 px-md-5 px-lg-15 text-dark text-justify\">\n<p>Unaware of its value, and believing they were just a\u00a0<em>mas<\/em>\u00a0<em>itam<\/em>\u00a0or common variety of mango,\u00a0<em>kampung<\/em>\u00a0folk left the fruit to rot on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Three years ago, the Rhu Tapai project literally bore fruit that was similar in quality to what was produced in northern Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, the aim of the state government is to see the high-quality fruit penetrating overseas markets because it doesn\u2019t just promote crop diversification but also increases the income of farmers, said Azman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12 mt-4 px-sm-0 px-md-5 px-lg-15 text-dark text-justify\">\n<p>\u201cWhat is happening now is all part of the 2019-2023 Terengganu Agricultural Strategic Plan. The department is working with others to gather people who are interested in growing harumanis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFarming is a career, so the youth of Terengganu should take up available\u00a0courses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that much of the state\u2019s roughly 68,000ha of land covered with BRIS soil has been left idle and this is why the state government is keen to invest in people who will bring the plan to fruition through\u00a0market guidance and assistance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12 mt-4 px-sm-0 px-md-5 px-lg-15 text-dark text-justify\">\n<p>Nurul Ameera Mohammad, the agricultural officer overseeing the growing of harumanis in Rhu Tapai, said: \u201cIn the beginning, there were just 30 trees which (three years ago) produced the first batch of 20 \u2013 60 fruit per season.
