{"id":4148,"date":"2020-06-10T10:19:44","date_gmt":"2020-06-10T02:19:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=4148"},"modified":"2020-06-10T10:19:44","modified_gmt":"2020-06-10T02:19:44","slug":"muhyiddin-prime-minister-with-little-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=4148","title":{"rendered":"Muhyiddin: Prime Minister with little politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12 mt-4 px-sm-0 px-md-5 px-lg-15 text-dark text-justify\">\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, June 10\u00a0 &#8211; After 100 days in office as the country\u2019s 8th\u00a0Prime Minister, many may have noticed that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin\u00a0does not engage too much in politics and\u00a0rarely issued political statements.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he focuses\u00a0much of his time and efforts\u00a0on addressing the COVID-19 outbreak\u00a0and the economic challenges facing the country due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12 mt-4 px-sm-0 px-md-5 px-lg-15 text-dark text-justify\">\n<p>His action in being less political since assuming the post of Prime Minister on March 1, is seen by some, as a major factor contributing to the country\u2019s stability, despite the political turmoil\u00a0leading to his premiership.<\/p>\n<p>Recalling an interview he had with RTM on April 25, Muhyiddin said he believed the people are fed-up with political stories.<\/p>\n<p>Political analyst Prof Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmod regarded Muhyiddin\u2019s action in playing down politics as a person who talks less\u00a0but works efficiently to deliver fast and accurate message, instead of talking rhetorics and giving empty political promises.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12 mt-4 px-sm-0 px-md-5 px-lg-15 text-dark text-justify\">\n<p>Despite being the president of\u00a0Bersatu, one of the parties that made up the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, he said, Muhyiddin rarely criticised the opposition parties, even when they\u00a0besmirched him and his government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is a man with a big heart and is still trying to make peace and meet up with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany think that this is a tactical move in politics, but that is Muhyiddin&#8217;s character and his way of calming down a hot situation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12 mt-4 px-sm-0 px-md-5 px-lg-15 text-dark text-justify\">\n<p>A geostrategist,\u00a0Azmi Hassan, said the country needs an exceptional leader to face extraordinary challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA prime minister should have this special attribute, not only to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, but also the political crisis\u00a0in the country, which seems to be no end, and on the vote of no-confidence made against him (Muhyiddin),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Scrolling through Muhyiddin&#8217;s\u00a0social media sites, they indeed contain images, posters, and videos, as well as his comments on\u00a0current and international issues, with none on politics.<\/p>\n<p>A senior lecturer at the\u00a0Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Centre of General Studies and Co-Curricula,\u00a0Dr Mohd\u00a0Akbal Abdullah, said Muhyiddin chose to focus on the country\u2019s administration, instead\u00a0of playing politics, given the fact that he was not the new kid on the block.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has been in politics for a long time, he is used to the ups and downs, the criticism and accusations from friends and foes, all these provide him with the\u00a0tonic to remain\u00a0focused on\u00a0governing the country, instead of just playing politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis prowess is\u00a0to quickly realise the good of his friends and the edge his opponents have.\u00a0In this way he will be cherished by friends and respected by foes,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Another political analyst, Ayatullah Helme\u00a0Mohd Hanafi, an editor at Akhbar Wilayahku, said\u00a0 Muhyiddin is\u00a0doing his best\u00a0despite the\u00a0difficulties and constraints due to the unstable political situation in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough he rarely goes on television, his aura is felt every time he\u00a0appears.
