PUTRAJAYA, June 2 – Malaysia recorded a single-digit increase in local transmission of COVID-19 with only five cases out of the 20 new cases reported today.<\/p>\n

Health director-general\u00a0Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the 20 cases, 15 were imported cases who got infected overseas.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf the five local transmissions, three cases involved non-Malaysians and two others were Malaysians,\u201d he told the daily press conference on COVID-19 here today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current cumulative total of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia now stood at 7,877, with 1,292\u00a0 active infectivity cases and all the patients have been isolated and are undergoing treatment.<\/p>\n

No deaths were recorded today, thus keeping the death toll at 115.<\/p>\n

Dr Noor Hisham said 66 patients had recovered and were discharged today, bringing the cumulative figure to\u00a06,470 or 82.1 per cent of the total cases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He said six cases were still being treated in the intensive care unit, with two requiring ventilator support.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Cheras Apartment cluster likely due to Raya visits<\/strong><\/h5>\n

In another news, the cause of the spread of the new COVID-19 cluster, the Cheras Apartment cluster, is likely to be due to home visits before and during Hari Raya Aidilfitri.<\/p>\n

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the actual\u00a0cause which has resulted in the cluster was still being investigated.<\/p>\n

Elaborating on the cluster he said, the first case was detected through screening of students of a\u00a0tahfiz centre, which was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and the Health\u00a0Ministry (MOH).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“However,\u00a0investigations showed that none of the students, teachers or staff members at the centre had history of attending the tabligh rally in Seri Petaling.<\/p>\n

“So far there are six cases from this cluster, three are residents at the apartment while three others are not living in the vicinity, \u201c he said.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, the\u00a0MOH via Twitter, informed the detection of the new cluster.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dr Noor Hisham said it was through active case detection that all of them were found to be infected\u00a0and the positive cases were family members and friends of the first case.<\/p>\n

“So far, 120 people have been identified and screened, six of whom were\u00a0COVID-19 positive, 76 were tested negative, and the result\u00a0on 38 others,\u00a0still pending,” he said.<\/p>\n

Dr Noor Hisham said in addition to the active case detection measure, several preventive steps have been taken at the apartment block, among them contact isolation and sampling, carrying out disinfecting and\u00a0sanitising activities\u00a0as well as creating awareness on prevention of COVID-19 infection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
