KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 –\u00a0International Trade\u00a0and Industry Minister\u00a0Datuk Seri\u00a0Mohamed Azmin Ali was granted an audience with the\u00a0Yang\u00a0di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today to\u00a0brief\u00a0and update\u00a0the King on measures taken by the government to mitigate the effect of COVID-19 on the economy and welfare of the people.<\/p>\n

Comptroller of the Royal Household\u00a0of\u00a0Istana Negara\u00a0Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said through the\u00a030-minute video conference at Istana Negara here, His Majesty was briefed on the roles and measures taken by the\u00a0International Trade\u00a0and Industry Ministry (MITI) following the announcement of the Movement Control Order\u00a0(MCO)\u00a0which\u00a0took\u00a0effect from March 18.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s session reflects His Majesty\u2019s concern\u00a0on public\u00a0health containment\u00a0measures for COVID-19 and its\u00a0impact on the\u00a0country’s economy.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAl-Sultan Abdullah has also expressed his support for the measures\u00a0especially the efforts to ensure\u00a0that there is\u00a0sufficient supply\u00a0of food and\u00a0essential items\u00a0throughout the MCO period,\u201d he said in a statement here today.<\/p>\n

The video conference with\u00a0Mohamed Azmin who is also Senior Minister (Economic Cluster) was the third conducted\u00a0during the MCO after the first and second were held with Health Minister\u00a0Datuk Seri Dr\u00a0Adham Baba and Minister in the Prime Minister\u2019s Department (Religious Affairs)\u00a0Datuk Seri Dr\u00a0Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri.<\/p>\n

Ahmad Fadil said the King was also briefed on the government\u2019s decision to set up the\u00a0special Cabinet committee\u00a0to mitigate the impact of COVID-19\u00a0on the economy and labour market which was jointly led by MITI and the Defence Ministry.<\/p>\n

Al-Sultan Abdullah also expressed concern over the impact of the pandemic on\u00a0small\u00a0and\u00a0medium enterprises and labour force\u00a0in the country and hoped the measures taken by the government would\u00a0prove fruitful, he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ahmad Fadil said the King\u00a0called on\u00a0all 1.5 million employees and employers of companies in certain sectors\u00a0which have been allowed\u00a0to operate during the MCO to adhere to the standard operating procedure and guidelines set by the Health Ministry as well as\u00a0enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n

Strict adherence to the guidelines is important to prevent\u00a0the emergence of a\u00a0new\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0cluster, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHis Majesty is aware of the current situation\u00a0faced by all parties inlcuding the people following the implementation of the MCO which enters\u00a0its sixth week.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs such the King\u00a0hope that\u00a0people\u00a0would continue to be\u00a0patient\u00a0and persevere in dealing with\u00a0the challenges\u00a0until the situation returns to normal,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
