KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 –\u00a0The\u00a0Malaysian-born UK-based trainee surgeon, Dr Amalina Bakri has joined a team of scientist at the Imperial College in London to find a vaccine in the battle against COVID-19, which affected people worldwide.<\/p>\n
Dr Amalina on her personal Twitter account said she was involved in recruiting healthy volunteers based in the United Kingdom to facilitate the vaccine trials that is being conducted at the Imperial College\u2019s National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).<\/p>\n
\u201cThe first of the UK vaccine trials has started at the NIHR Imperial Clinical Research Facility\u00a0@imperialcollege<\/a> led by Dr Katrina Pollock. I\u2019m involved in recruiting healthy volunteers and vaccinating them in the next few weeks,\u201d Dr Amalina tweeted\u00a0on Wednesday.<\/p>\n Dr Pollock is a\u00a0\u00a0Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Vaccinology and Honorary Consultant in Genitourinary and HIV Medicine at Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.<\/p>\n Dr Amalina said: \u201cThis is one of the two\u00a0candidate vaccines that we will test at Imperial College. Great effort from Imperial team and very excited to see the outcome!\u201d<\/p>\n Dr Amalina\u00a0added that it is\u00a0\u201ca collaboration study with Oxford. Imperial and Oxford are both testing the same vaccine. Multi-centre randomised controlled trial.\u201d<\/p>\n She also shared @ImperialMed’s tweet requesting for voluntary participants.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, UK health secretary Matt Hancock tweeted: \u201cThe first human trials for vaccines begin in the UK on Thursday (April 23) .
