{"id":3477,"date":"2020-04-22T19:39:46","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T11:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=3477"},"modified":"2020-04-22T19:39:46","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T11:39:46","slug":"press-freedom-malaysia-rises-22-spots-to-101-in-2020-rsfs-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=3477","title":{"rendered":"Press freedom &#8211; Malaysia rises 22 spots to 101 in 2020 RSF&#8217;s index"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12 mt-4 px-sm-0 px-md-5 px-lg-15 text-dark text-justify\">\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 &#8211; Malaysia showed major improvement after leaping 22 spots to 101st place in the\u00a0annual 2020 World Press Freedom index by non-profit group Reporters Without Borders (RSF).<\/p>\n<p>In the 2020 index, Malaysia also outranked its regional peers in ASEAN including Indonesia (119), the Philippines (136), Myanmar (139), Thailand (140), Cambodia (144), Brunei (152), Singapore (158), Laos (172) and Vietnam (175).<\/p>\n<p>According to RSF, Malaysia\u2019s score dropped by\u00a03.62 points to 33.12 in 2020, with the\u00a0lower score indicating\u00a0greater freedom of the press.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12 mt-4 px-sm-0 px-md-5 px-lg-15 text-dark text-justify\">\n<p>In the country profile for Malaysia, RSF described the country\u2019s press freedom as receiving a breath of \u2018fresh air\u2019 after a surprising first-ever defeat of Datuk Seri Najib Razak\u2019s ruling coalition in the May 2018 general elections.<\/p>\n<p>It noted\u00a0that blacklisted news sites like Sarawak Report have\u00a0been able to resume working without fear of harassment.
