KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 – The Communications and Multimedia Ministry\u00a0(KKMM) Quick Response Team takes between 30 minutes and three hours to verify any viral news and simultaneously prevent fake news from spreading, its secretary-general Datuk Suriani Ahmad said yesterday.<\/p>\n

She said the team\u2019s efficiency and speed in checking the veracity of the news was achieved through\u00a0close cooperation with other government agencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe longest it takes (to verify the news) is three hours because we want to be fast to counter the spread (of fake news).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe want to counter the allegations and we cooperate a lot with other government agencies, who respond swiftly as well as\u00a0provide the latest and verified information,\u201d she said as a guest on Bernama TV\u2019s Ruang Bicara programme titled \u201cPasukan Respon Pantas KKMM – Perangi Berita Palsu\u201d (KKMM Quick Response Team – Countering\u00a0Fake News).<\/p>\n

She said that KKMM also monitored the sharing of viral news among social media users to counter the spread of fake news.<\/p>\n

Suriani said this was done by a team to speedily verify the authenticity of the news which had gone viral, depending on the level of seriousness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The team is headed by an officer from the KKMM Strategic Communications Division and comprises staff from the ministry and agencies like the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as well as representatives from the National Security Council (NSC).<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, commenting on the Sebenarnya.my<\/a> portal, which is led by KKMM, she said information on the portal was updated daily.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes we repost (the information) depending on the level of seriousness of the fake news so that it is no longer a topic of discussion,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The KKMM Quick Response Team was formed on March 16 to\u00a0counter\u00a0the spread of fake news and verify\u00a0certain news, especially in situations where there are many fake news items being disseminated until they cause\u00a0anxiety among the public.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Fake news and disinformation have\u00a0become\u00a0another unprecedented issue.<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Last Saturday, Communications and Multimedia Minister\u00a0Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said as Malaysia is facing an unprecedented problem in\u00a0COVID-19 and the frontliners are\u00a0doing their best to overcome the crisis,\u00a0fake news and disinformation have\u00a0become\u00a0another unprecedented issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day, we have to form and prepare (answers from) the rapid response team (that would answer any queries regarding COVID-19,\u00a0as a countermeasure to\u00a0fake news). Every day, we have eight to nine\u00a0issues to clarify\u2026(about) 120 issues to date,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Saifuddin said this\u00a0war\u00a0to counter\u00a0fake news is far from over and the public need to be educated every single day using all sorts of platforms, including social media and mainstream media.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want everyone to be safe. We can do this together by\u00a0spreading love, and not fear mongering;\u00a0this is the way forward. We have to learn the new normal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Talking about the action on misinformation, Saifuddin said it was something that should not be compromised especially in times when the nation is at war against the deadly pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0have to strike a balance. On the one hand, we must be strong believers. We must embrace all the good virtues, values of freedom, democracy, and the right\u00a0to information, But at the same time, the irony is we still have to take action on misinformation,\u201d he added<\/p>\n
