KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 –\u00a0Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia (PEKA Malaysia) have expressed their wholehearted support to the Sultan of Perak\u2019s views regarding environmental degradation and climate change.<\/p>\n

In a statement last night PEKA\u00a0president Puan Sri Shariffa Sabrina Syed Akil commended HRH Sultan Nazrin for speaking out for the environment and urge the Government be it federal or State and local authorities, along with associated agencies \u2013 as well as businesses and institutions to stop environmental exploitation for business profit.<\/p>\n

HRH Sultan Nazrin recently shared his concerns<\/a> about the environment, stating that extreme human interference in nature\u2019s ecosystems, coupled with human activities which abuses natural resources to make \u201cunbridled business profits\u201d, have caused the world today to face a rise in natural disasters.<\/p>\n

A timely reminder for governments; especially for Perak<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Calling it a timely reminder, Sabrina echoed the ruler’s views on the conflict between the importance of forests in containing climate change, forests as a sources of timber that can be sold for profit, and\u00a0that more must be done to stop unethical logging that goes unchecked due to greed and corruption.<\/p>\n

“As an environmental NGO, PEKA Malaysia has been fighting, advising<\/a>, and warning the federal and state governments regarding this issue but sadly, our efforts have fallen on deaf ears.<\/p>\n

“It is also important to note that the diverse biodiversity which, makes up the forest requires equal protection.” said Sabrina further.<\/p>\n

In the statement PEKA urged the Perak Government to heed HRH Sultan Nazrin\u2019s advice and review its’ policies regarding logging, mining and other economic activities that destroy the natural environment.<\/p>\n

“Instead of\u00a0exploiting and depleting its natural resources, the state must change and focus on environmental conservation and rehabilitation which too is capable of contributing to the economy as exemplified by nations like Buthan, Costa Rica and even New Zealand,” said Sabrina.<\/p>\n

Stop persecuting Orang Asli<\/strong><\/h5>\n

More importantly, PEKA calls for the government to cease its concerted campaign to persecute the Orang Asli for defending Mother Nature.<\/p>\n

“The Orang Asli\u2019s rights and status as custodians of the natural environment should be legally acknowledged and protected by the authorities.” said Sabrina.<\/p>\n

She also added that it is saddening to see how the state government continues to undermine the Orang Asli by allowing irresponsible businesses to conduct logging activities in their native territory that threaten the natural environment and the Orang Asli’s way of life.<\/p>\n

PEKA also call for an immediate end to the antagonistic approach towards environmental NGOs, activists and the Orang Asli as they play an important role in ensuring and providing adequate check and balance against excesses.<\/p>\n
