The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/retail-and-services\/sports-direct-confirms-sale-and-leaseback-deal-for-headquarters-1.3906869\">deal<\/a> between Sports Direct and EPF-owned Kwasa Logix Sportivo will see Sports Direct taking a 15-year lease on the property.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis investment is an opportunity for the EPF to generate an assured income stream matching our risk return profile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn line with EPF\u2019s investment policies, comprehensive due diligence and robust governance standards were followed in completing the purchase of the logistics asset.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This deal will complement and form part of the EPF\u2019s UK real property portfolio,\u201d EPF said.<\/p>\n<p>It seems EPF will be housing a company that has been compared to a &#8216;gulag&#8217;, a forced-labour camp.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Shirebrook warehouse compared to &#8216;gulag&#8217; or &#8216;Victorian workhouse&#8217;<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Allegations of harassment, abuse and illegal working practices\u00a0in the Derbyshire warehouse have formed a central part of the criticism leveled against the company since a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2015\/dec\/09\/sports-direct-warehouse-work-conditions\">Guardian expos\u00e9<\/a> caused widespread outrage last year when workers described working there as a &#8220;gulag.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Mike Ashley, founder of Sports Direct was grilled by a Commons select committee about conditions at his sportswear chain\u2019s warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>He even admitted that staff got less than the minimum wage and were fined for being late \u2014 as he was accused of running a \u201cgulag\u201d labour camp.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A woman scared of taking time off work even gave birth in the toilets, shocked MPs were told.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Staff could be sacked for taking days off to look after sick children, chatting too much or spending too long in the toilet in a \u201csix strikes and you\u2019re out of work\u201d regime.<\/p>\n<div class=\"advert-wrapper advert-wrapper--outstream\">\n<p id=\"outstream\" class=\"dfp-ad advert--outstream\">&#8220;Workers without bank accounts had wages paid by a debit card system which cost them at least \u00a310 a month, the hearing was told.&#8221; &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/1246497\/sports-direct-founder-mike-ashley-accused-of-running-a-gulag-after-mp-grilling\/\">The Sun<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2302 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/sPORTDIRECTSHAME.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/sPORTDIRECTSHAME.jpg 620w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/sPORTDIRECTSHAME-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/sPORTDIRECTSHAME-156x100.jpg 156w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/sPORTDIRECTSHAME-350x225.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h5><strong>Ashley refused to invest in technology, focused on &#8216;cheap labor&#8217;<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p>In November 2015, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2015\/dec\/09\/sports-direct-warehouse-work-conditions\">Guardian<\/a> placed two undercover reporters inside the Shirebrook warehouse, as well as speaking to scores of current and past Sports Direct workers.<\/p>\n<p>The story that emerged shows\u00a0Ashley\u00a0refusing to increase productivity by investing in new technology. He believes productivity gains promised by the new technology are non-existent unless you know what products your warehouse will be handling years in advance.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he focuses on building a retail machine whose cogs almost entirely consist of people: cheap people, typically from eastern Europe, who understand little, if any, English.<\/p>\n<p>To accommodate them, all signs and announcements inside the building are made in Polish as well as English.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>The Times (UK News) indirectly compared Mike Ashley to Korea&#8217;s Kim Jong Un<\/strong><\/h5>\n<section class=\"Article-body Article-container\">\n<div class=\"Article-content has-dropCap\">\n<p>&#8220;He\u2019s the supreme leader. He\u2019s in charge of what many regard as a rogue institution. His inner circle is packed with family members and toadies. He routinely flouts the norms of good behaviour and sticks two fingers up at his critics. He\u2019s a relative lightweight, but has run circles around his much more powerful enemies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Apart from that, and a common rotundity, there is no similarity between Mike Ashley and Kim Jong-un. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipso.co.uk\/rulings-and-resolution-statements\/ruling\/?id=01108-18\">IPSO<\/a> sided with him one of the complaints, they didn&#8217;t find anything wrong about the comparison to Kim Jong Un,\u00a0but considered that it was a matter of comment and interpretation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"subscription-block ArticleMarketing ArticleMarketing--footer Article-container\">\n<div class=\"read-more-block\">\n<h5 id=\"ad-subscription-read-more\" data-google-query-id=\"CP_S-6zpzOICFQZ5jwodymcBlA\"><strong>Is EPF championing worker abuse?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Housing a &#8216;gulag&#8217; may be\u00a0a first for EPF but investing in companies with allegations of worker abuse is nothing new with EPF.<\/p>\n<p>As at 30 May 2019, EPF holds <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bursamalaysia.com\/market\/listed-companies\/company-announcements\/6184201\">169,495,422<\/a> shares in Top Glove, a local company with multiple allegations of worker abuse. That amount translates to over RM840 million as of today&#8217;s share price of RM5.00.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/news.trust.org\/item\/20181209121918-bcpa2\/\">Thomas Reuters Foundation<\/a> revealed in December 2018 that migrant workers at Top Glove often work long hours to earn overtime to clear debts to recruitment agents back home and, in some cases, exceed the legal overtime limit.<\/p>\n<p>Some clocked 90 &#8211; 120 hours of overtime a month, according to documents seen by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, above the 104 hour overtime limit stipulated by Malaysia&#8217;s labour laws.<\/p>\n<p>Around the same time, The Guardian alleged Top Glove to subjecting thousands of migrant workers from Nepal and Bangladesh to exploitative working conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian interviewed 16 migrant workers at the company and all 16\u00a0alleged they had their passports involuntarily held by the company and were unable to get them back on request, while reportedly \u201cunsafe\u201d factory conditions at Top Glove meant limbs had been lost in accidents.<\/p>\n<p>The company strongly denied the allegation of confiscating passports but chose to use the term &#8220;Systematic Confiscation of Passports from Migrant&#8221; workers in its <a href=\"https:\/\/finnwatch.org\/images\/top-glove-letter-to-stakeholders-on-Migrant-Workers-Rights.ex.pdf\">letter to stakeholder<\/a>. Perhaps a systematic-confiscation is not a form of confiscation?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2299 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/systematic-confiscation.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/systematic-confiscation.png 760w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/systematic-confiscation-300x270.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/systematic-confiscation-111x100.png 111w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/systematic-confiscation-350x315.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Interestingly, the company did not deny or confirm the allegation of &#8216;unsafe&#8217; factory conditions at Top Glove where limbs had been lost in accidents, which suggest that the allegation may not be baseless.<\/p>\n<p>The company admitted that excessive overtime is their main concern and in what seemed to be a staged PR exercise, Minister of Human Resource, <a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/2018\/12\/10\/inexperienced-minister-exonerated-top-glove-government-funds-hold-more-than-10-stake-in-the-company\/\">M Kulasegaran<\/a> was quick to defend Top Glove against the allegation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"subscription-block ArticleMarketing ArticleMarketing--footer Article-container\">\n<div class=\"read-more-block\">\n<p>\u201cI do not deny some foreign workers are working longer than permitted under the Employment Act and we will take action. Dhanusuvel had also alleged that\u00a0there was also a Nepali worker held at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The case received wide media coverage, with <a href=\"https:\/\/says.com\/my\/news\/top-glove-malaysia-accused-of-labour-abuse\">Says.com<\/a> summarizing it best.<\/p>\n<p>Dhanusuvel was later dismissed by the company.
