KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 \u00a0–\u00a0The Online Safety Bill is expected to be\u00a0presented to\u00a0the Dewan Rakyat in October\u00a0in full\u00a0and\u00a0take\u00a0into account cyber crimes that may\u00a0arise\u00a0in the future.
Deputy\u00a0Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid said the new\u00a0law\u00a0was\u00a0introduced for\u00a0the\u00a0benefit\u00a0of all Malaysians, especially children who use the\u00a0internet daily. “In that\u00a0regard, we are very\u00a0worried\u00a0about\u00a0the victims, the\u00a0victims of\u00a0fraud\u00a0and of course this\u00a0law\u00a0will look at\u00a0certain areas\u00a0in terms of crimes that\u00a0maybe is\u00a0not\u00a0happening now,\u00a0but there are\u00a0some\u00a0things that we\u00a0think\u00a0may happen in the\u00a0future,\u201d\u00a0he said.
He\u00a0spoke to reporters after the\u00a0launch of the Online Harm\u00a0International Legal Conference\u00a02024,\u00a0which was attended by the Minister in the Prime\u00a0Minister’s\u00a0Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and the Spanish Ambassador to\u00a0Malaysia, Jos\u00e9\u00a0Luis Pardo.\u00a0Ahmad\u00a0Zahid said the Attorney\u00a0General’s Office\u00a0will draft the bill\u00a0which will\u00a0be\u00a0submitted\u00a0to the Cabinet for approval before being\u00a0sent to\u00a0the Dewan Rakyat in October.
Azalina\u00a0was previously\u00a0quoted as saying\u00a0that\u00a0she would introduce\u00a0the\u00a0bill,\u00a0while implementation and enforcement\u00a0would be\u00a0the\u00a0responsibility of the Communications\u00a0Ministry through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).\u00a0In\u00a0his\u00a0opening remarks,\u00a0Ahmad\u00a0Zahid,\u00a0who is also the\u00a0chairman\u00a0of the National Social Council, said\u00a0that\u00a0the council is dedicated to\u00a0promoting\u00a0values \u200b\u200band building human\u00a0rights\u00a0to\u00a0improve\u00a0social\u00a0relations,\u00a0stability and well-being of\u00a0Malaysians who are civilized\u00a0and\u00a0stay strong.\u00a0society.
He\u00a0said\u00a0that\u00a0the council is\u00a0working hard on important\u00a0issues such as mental health support through initiatives\u00a0such as\u00a0the Talian HEAL (Bantuan Krisis Kesihatan Mental) crisis hotline, which provides those in\u00a0need of help. “Additionally,\u00a0we are\u00a0working hard\u00a0to combat the growing threat of online\u00a0crime,\u00a0which\u00a0is increasing\u00a0as people spend more time in digital\u00a0spaces.
“These\u00a0combined efforts are part of our broader commitment to\u00a0ensure\u00a0that the benefits of technology are\u00a0used appropriately\u00a0and that\u00a0our nation’s\u00a0social\u00a0relations remain\u00a0strong and\u00a0– consistent despite\u00a0these new\u00a0challenges,”\u00a0he said.\u00a0Talking about\u00a0the tragic death of Rajeswary Appahu,\u00a0a victim of cyberbullying and\u00a0known online as Esha, he said\u00a0that\u00a0the younger generation is exposed to\u00a0dangers\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0previous\u00a0generation\u00a0never\u00a0faced,\u00a0such as cyberbullying,\u00a0l exposing\u00a0inappropriate content\u00a0to\u00a0online predators.
