{"id":16711,"date":"2023-03-28T14:17:26","date_gmt":"2023-03-28T06:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=16711"},"modified":"2023-03-28T14:17:26","modified_gmt":"2023-03-28T06:17:26","slug":"corruption-among-enforcement-personnel-chronic-worrisome-macc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=16711","title":{"rendered":"Corruption among enforcement personnel chronic, worrisome &#8211; MACC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>KUALA LUMPUR, March 28<\/strong> &#8212; The level of corruption involving enforcement personnel at the country\u2019s frontlines is growing chronic and worrisome, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy chief commissioner (Operations)\u00a0Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahmad Khusairi said the influx of illegal immigrants, workers and students in the country was viewed as a big opportunity for a minority of unethical enforcement personnel to secure bribes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said it did not matter if the foreigner had a work permit or student visa, what more those without and were illegals, they were still targeted by enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is what is happening and gives a very bad image to Malaysia,\u201d he said in a statement today, adding that the slogan \u2018Malaysia Boleh\u2019 was often used as a cynical criticism implying that everything is possible with a bribe.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-28-at-2.15.42-PM-1024x601.png\" alt=\"macc\" class=\"wp-image-16712\" width=\"717\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-28-at-2.15.42-PM-1024x601.png 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-28-at-2.15.42-PM-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-28-at-2.15.42-PM-768x451.png 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-28-at-2.15.42-PM-1536x902.png 1536w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-28-at-2.15.42-PM-170x100.png 170w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-28-at-2.15.42-PM-350x205.png 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-28-at-2.15.42-PM-800x470.png 800w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-28-at-2.15.42-PM.png 1564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 717px) 100vw, 717px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo it\u2019s not surprising that Malaysia has become a focus for foreign workers looking for work, a drug transit in the South East Asian region, an international scam and fake investment centre, as well as a haven for online gambling, Macau scams and&nbsp;international prostitution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe often deny and ignore reality, looking for various excuses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahmad Khusairi said the most common comment about corruption among enforcement was that it was \u2018an isolated incident\u2019, and that it no longer could be used as an excuse to deny the reality of how rampant it was among enforcement personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that corruption had permeated every inch of foreign workers\u2019 lives in the country, including the process of applying for foreign worker quotas by companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo secure this quota, companies are forced to pay bribes to ensure their approval in terms of the number of foreign workers allowed to be brought in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides this, he said bribing enforcement personnel occurred at the country\u2019s entry points to speed up the entry and exit of foreign workers who overstayed, or are involved in crime, were blacklisted, or did not fulfil entry requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that corruption also occurred in the misuse of foreign student visas for work and business, as well as unsavoury activities such as prostitution, massage parlours, gambling, Macau scams, most of which rely on foreign workers,&nbsp;and the act of&nbsp;protecting such operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is part of the offences that are linked to foreign workers in the country.
