SHAH ALAM, March 23<\/strong> — There is no need to\u00a0take action under the Sedition Act\u00a0against\u00a0Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the former prime minister\u2019s\u00a0criticism\u00a0of\u00a0the government, said\u00a0Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Saifuddin Nasution said he will leave it fully to the police to take appropriate action if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor now, I don\u2019t see the need (to take action under the Sedition Act against Dr Mahathir).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe most important thing is that anyone can express their opinions\u00a0but never cross the line and\u00a0touch\u00a0on matters related to religion, race, and the royal institution,\u201d\u00a0he told reporters here.<\/p>\n\n\n

He said this in response to Padang Rengas UMNO division chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz who called for action under the Sedition Act to be taken against Dr Mahathir for criticising the current government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saifuddin said that his ministry\u00a0took note of the organisation of a rally and the \u201cMalay Proclamation\u201d event\u00a0which the former prime minister had been due to attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was organised following\u00a0Dr Mahathir\u2019s claim that Malays\u00a0have lost more power under\u00a0 the current government\u00a0administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe the people can see for themselves whether the allegations are true…Tun (Dr Mahathir) himself has been in power for 22 years and 22 months. There were a lot of things he could have done to protect the Malays and prevent\u00a0the things that\u00a0Tun are\u00a0concerned\u00a0about from occurring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo it is unwarranted to worry that such a thing has happened during these four months,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Saifuddin attended the Ikon Madani Townhall organised by Yayasan Prihatin Nasional which was attended by about 2,000 Universiti Teknologi Mara and Universiti Pertahanan Awam Nasional students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
