The government has no plans to reinstate\u00a0the Goods and Services Tax (GST)\u00a0or introduce any other broad-based consumption tax as a means of\u00a0addressing the national debt issue, said Prime Minister\u00a0Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anwar, who is also&nbsp;finance minister, said other measures will&nbsp;be taken in the effort to reduce expenditures and settle&nbsp;the government\u2019s liabilities and debt worth&nbsp;RM1.5 trillion, which is equivalent to&nbsp;82 per cent of the country\u2019s Gross Domestic Product.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we will tighten (in spending) is through subsidy reduction for the wealthy, such as that done\u00a0in terms of electricity subsidy.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-14-at-12.39.00-PM-1024x545.png\" alt=\"tax\" class=\"wp-image-16331\" width=\"692\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-14-at-12.39.00-PM-1024x545.png 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-14-at-12.39.00-PM-300x160.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-14-at-12.39.00-PM-768x409.png 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-14-at-12.39.00-PM-188x100.png 188w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-14-at-12.39.00-PM-350x186.png 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-14-at-12.39.00-PM-800x426.png 800w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-14-at-12.39.00-PM.png 1172w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 692px) 100vw, 692px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs I have explained in a&nbsp;previous session (in Parliament), while&nbsp;the previous government&nbsp;planned to raise electricity tariff rates, the present administration&nbsp;has aborted the plan and only decided to impose (subsidy reduction)&nbsp;on the T20 (top 20 per cent&nbsp;income) group as well as multinational and large companies, except those dealing with&nbsp;food security,\u201d he said during the Minister\u2019s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anwar was responding to a supplementary question from&nbsp;Wong Kah Woh (PH-Taiping) on whether the government would introduce new taxes to ease&nbsp;the nation\u2019s debt burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prime minister said the government will also strengthen&nbsp;the administrative positions in view of&nbsp;billions of ringgit being&nbsp;lost due to weak administration and leakages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDue to the national debt being higher than the country\u2019s&nbsp;growth, other measures need to be taken including&nbsp;ensuring the revenue base is expanded and reviewing the public expenditure method without burdening the people, especially in the areas of education, health and basic needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will consider all these matters when tabling Budget 2023 on Feb 24,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernama.com\/en\/news.php?id=2164323\">Bernama<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 14 &#8212;
