{"id":16271,"date":"2023-02-07T13:34:31","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T05:34:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=16271"},"modified":"2023-02-07T13:34:33","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T05:34:33","slug":"deadly-earthquakes-over-2300-in-turkiye-1300-in-syria-killed-ankara-declares-7-day-national-mourning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=16271","title":{"rendered":"Deadly earthquakes: Over 2,300 in Turkiye, 1,300 in Syria killed, Ankara declares 7-day national mourning"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DIYARBAKIR (Turkiye), Feb 7 <\/strong>&#8212;\u00a0At least 2,379 people were killed and 14,483 others were injured in 10 provinces of T\u00fcrkiye following two strong earthquakes that jolted the southern part of the country on Monday, Anadolu Agency reported\u00a0Vice President Fuat Oktay said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early Monday morning, a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Pazarcik district of Kahramanmaras province and strongly shook several other provinces, including Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay and Kilis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at 1.24 pm\u00a0(6.24pm Malaysia Time), a 7.6 magnitude quake centered in Kahramanmaras\u2019s Elbistan district struck the region.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-07-at-1.32.35-PM-1024x627.png\" alt=\"earthquakes\" class=\"wp-image-16272\" width=\"594\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-07-at-1.32.35-PM-1024x627.png 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-07-at-1.32.35-PM-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-07-at-1.32.35-PM-768x470.png 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-07-at-1.32.35-PM-163x100.png 163w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-07-at-1.32.35-PM-350x214.png 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-07-at-1.32.35-PM-800x490.png 800w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-07-at-1.32.35-PM.png 1186w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oktay said a total of 7,840 people have been rescued from the rubble so far as 11,022 search and rescue teams are working in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said 338,000 earthquake victims have been housed in dormitories, universities and shelters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is currently no tsunami threat to T\u00fcrkiye&#8217;s Eastern Mediterranean coasts, it reported Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD)&nbsp;said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The powerful quakes also devastated neighbouring Syria with&nbsp;government and rescue officials reported that nearly 1,300 people were killed and over 2,400 others were wounded in the quakes so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkiye\u2019s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday\u2019s&nbsp;quake was the &#8220;biggest disaster&#8221; since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">T\u00fcrkiye will observe seven days of national mourning following the deadly earthquakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Due to the earthquakes that took place in our country on Feb&nbsp;6, a national mourning period was declared for seven days.
